Upgrade your mobile gaming experience with this pro-level controller.

For many years I was a dedicated first-person shooter (FPS) gamer and I only played on console systems. I tried PC gaming and mobile gaming platforms, but they just didn’t suit me. I liked the feel of a standard size game controller and I just didn’t get the precision I wanted from a PC’s keyboard/mouse or the on-screen controls on a mobile phone or tablet. Fortunately, Apple rolled out Bluetooth controller support with its 2019 iOS update. This opened the door for more advanced gaming options on Apple’s mobile devices and when I started actively playing Call of Duty: Mobile in 2022, I was able to have a near-console expereince thanks to my Xbox Elite Controller paired to my iPhone.

As much as I enjoy the experience I get with my Xbox controller, I am always looking at other options for better performance when I game. I want to make sure I’m getting the best possible gaming experience and I always want to have a backup option in case my primary controller fails. I’ve tried many different controllers including the following and none of them have met my gaming needs except the Microsoft Xbox Elite 2 controller.

BIGBIG WON Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller
  • Joso Bluetooth Gaming Controller
  • Razer Kishi V1 & V2 for iOS
  • 7 Watts Elite Series 2 Controller (modded)
  • Various touch-screen gamepads
  • Razer Raiju Gaming Controller
  • GuilKit Kingkong 2 Pro Wireless Bluetooth Controller
  • Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller
  • RiotPWR Xbox Edition
  • Gamevice FLEX for iOS
  • PowerA MOGA XP5-i Plus Bluetooth Controller
  • Backbone One for iOS
  • RiotPWR ESL iOS Controller
  • Scuf Instinct Pro Controller
  • GameSir X2 Lightning Mobile Gaming Controller
  • Steel Series Nimbus

Since I’ve used such a wide variety of controllers, I had my doubts when I picked up the Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller. I quickly changed my tune once I had it configured and playing CODM with it.

User Experience

The Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller comes in a fairly standard sized gaming controller retail box. The name of the device and its main features are listed on the front of the box and the brand colors (bright orange and dark gray) are very prominent. When you open the box, you find the controller, its charging dock, and extra accessories for the gamepad. If you are familiar with the Xbox Elite 2 controller, the package is very similar to that.

Since the Xbox Series 2 Elite controller is my ‘go-to’ option for my CODM gaming activities, I took immediate notice to the similarities. The button and joystick layout on the Rainbox 2 is nearly identical and even the charging dock is close to the same as what the Xbox Elite 2 has.

BIGBIG WON Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller

The controller was very easy to set up. One of the things I’ve discovered while playing CODM is that not all controllers are compatible with that game — even if they are compatible with the mobile device. So, I was curious if I would run into programming issues like I did with other controller brands. Fortunately, I did not. My iPad Pro (my main gaming device for CODM) recognized it right away as a Bluetooth compatible controller and CODM saw I was connected to a controller. I did have to customize my button layout and program the pro-level buttons, but that was expected.

Now, even though the controller has a similar look to an Xbox controller, I found the gameplay to be quite a bit different — in a good way! The Rainbow 2 controller was very responsive and the back paddle buttons have a mechanical click when you press them. I loved this about the controller. I thought my response time in-game was faster than the Xbox Elite 2 controller and just really enjoyed my time playing with it.

I seriously considered switching over to the Rainbow 2 controller, but there were two big things that caused me to pause with that. First, there are only 1 physical paddles on the back. You can program the top M buttons as paddles, but I’m so used to four paddles that this threw me off a bit. While I could potentially relearn this new button layout.

The only options for updating the controller are through the app. My concern there is longevity. What happens if the company goes out of business or they stop supporting the app? Then I’m left with a dead controller. Some people might see this as a minor concern given the price-point of this controller.

BIGBIG WON Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller

Pros

  1. Looks and feels like an Xbox controller.
  2. Very responsive.
  3. Easy to customize with the app and on the controller.

Cons

  1. You must have app to do updates; you can’t just plug it into an Xbox.
  2. There are only two physical paddles on the back.

Conclusion

The Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller offers a solid and reliable gaming experience for both casual and hardcore gamers. It provides an exceptional gaming experience at an affordable price. The controller’s ergonomic design ensures comfort during long gaming sessions, while its customizable features allow for personalized gameplay. Its wireless capabilities provide freedom of movement without any noticeable lag or latency issues.

BIGBIG WON Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller

Overall, the Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller is a great investment for anyone looking to enhance their gaming experience. Because the Microsoft Xbox Elite controller can be a pricey controller option, the Rainbox 2 Pro is a much more budget-friendly alternative.

CODM M13 Morningstar Mythic – The Best in Its Class https://macsources.com/codm-m13-morningstar-mythic-the-best-in-its-class/ https://macsources.com/codm-m13-morningstar-mythic-the-best-in-its-class/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2023 17:26:42 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=116376 Don’t miss out on upgrading your arsenal with the M13 Morningstar Mythic skin in CODM!

Over the past 18 months, I’ve worked very hard to enhance my CODM weapon collection with a wide variety of classes and skins. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to enhance many of my guns with their Legendary and Mythic skins. One of my favorites — the M13 Morningstar — is getting ready to leave the store. This is a rerun of the original 2021 release of the Mythic M13 — not a redux.

This time around, this Mythic skin — or blueprint — was released in mid-July 2023. I had been eagerly awaiting the M13 Morningstar to make its appearance in the store, and as soon as it appeared, I snatched it up. Now that it’s about to leave the store — and there is no indication of when or if it will be available again — I don’t want others to let this opportunity slip away.

CODM M13 Morningstar Mythic

History of the M13 in Call of Duty

To understand why the Mythic version of this weapon is special, I thought I would provide a brief history of the M13 itself. The automatic assault rifle was originally released for Call of Duty: Mobile players in October 2021 as a part of Season 8 that year. It has become a fan-favorite weapon due to its high rate of fire. Even though it has a sub-par damage rating (consistent 5-shot kill), it has a lower recoil and larger magazine capacity than other assault rifles.

The real-world origins of this virtual firearm trace back to the H&K G36C, a German assault rifle developed in the 1990s. The G36C was designed to be compact and lightweight, making it ideal for close-quarters combat situations. The in-game M13 is also great for close range and mid-range combat.

Calling Card

The Power of the M13 Morningstar Mythic

Just like other guns in CODM, the M13 has Epic, Legendary, and Mythic skins available. The M13’s Mythic blueprint is referred to as Morningstar, after the angel of death, Azrael. As previously mentioned, this is a rerun of the 2021 release and all the same perks are included this time around. So, it’s a great time to pick it up if you didn’t get it the first time. It will take 8 upgrade levels to max it out. Many CODM laud the M13 Morningstar as the best non-upgraded Mythic in the game. That means you get a lot from the base level Mythic without having to upgrade it first, but you do get progressive add-ons that are worth the upgrade.

Some of the upgrades include:

  • Four reactive stages — two kills, four kills, six kills, and eight kills — color starts yellow and gradually turns red
  • Built-in Red Dot sight — helps with long-range battles
  • Ammo Counter that shows remaining count of magazine
  • Three (3) muzzle flashes
  • Three (3) kill effects
  • Stickers and trinkets

Legendary Thermite

In addition to the skin and its add-ons, this Mythic crate also includes the Special Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley Character called ‘Ghost — Azrael’. This is the only Mythic Ghost character within CODM. This Ghost skin is based more on a mystic look than a military one, which is part of what makes it such a special option with this draw. It is all black so it’s great for multiplayer as well as battle royale.

Other Items in Drop

  • Legendary Thermite
  • Emote – Fine Tuning
  • Deagle Skin
  • SKS Meteoric Skin
  • ReEntry Calling Card – features Ghost Azrael and M13 Morningstar
  • Animated Charm
  • Battle Royale Exclusive Item – Helicopter Skin
  • Epic Karambit

How to Get a Mythic Weapon in CODM

Mythic Weapons can only be obtained through the purchase of Mythic Drop Crates within the game. These crates are only available for a limited amount of time and can only be bought using in-game CP (COD Points). That period of time is not specified so it really is a game of chance. Crates contain a series of items — including emotes, trinkets, and, of course, the Mythic skins. Here’s how the process works.

  1. Open successive Mythic Drop Crates. Each crate costs more COD Points (CP).
  2. As more crates are opened, more items are removed, which increases your chance of getting the Mythic skin.
  3. Each crate has 10 rolls and you are guaranteed to receive the Mythic skin by the tenth roll. Ten rolls cost approximately 8,030 CP — or ~$75 USD (as of August 2023). You can use this Lucky Draw calculator to determine your spend on most types of draws in the game (global server only).

It is possible to get the skin on the first roll, but as I mentioned, it really is a game of chance, and the rolls are randomized.

While there are no real differences between the base stats of the standard, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic weapons, you might get different enhancements based on the skins (i.e. sights, etc.).

Final thoughts on the M13 Morningstar Mythic Drop

This is undoubtedly one of the best Mythic drops available in Call of Duty: Mobile, which is why it has been re-released just as it was two years ago. In my opinion, it’s 100% worth it to buy not only for the M13 Morningstar blueprint but also for the Ghost Azrael skin. With the possible exception of the emote, every step of this Mythic draw is worth owning. Check it out while you can!

My Top 4 Favorite Guns in CODM! https://macsources.com/my-top-three-favorite-guns-in-call-of-duty-mobile/ https://macsources.com/my-top-three-favorite-guns-in-call-of-duty-mobile/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:54:06 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=114518&preview=true&preview_id=114518 Find out which guns I find to be the powerful and effective for any Call of Duty: Mobile player.

Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM), a free-to-play first person shooter video game, continues to be one of the most popular mobile games available producing more than 1.27 billion dollars since its release in 2019. It offers a thrilling, immersive gaming experience that can travel with a player anywhere. One of the best features of the game is the large amount of weapons that are available to play with.

There are seven different classes of guns (assault rifles, sniper rifles, light machine guns, submachine guns, shotguns, marksman rifles, and pistols) as well as melee weapons, launchers, and then operator skills that all add to a player’s in-game abilities. I’ve spent a lot of time building out my profiles and been fortunate enough to be able to use nearly every gun offered in CODM. With that in mind, here are my top four favorite guns for Call of Duty: Mobile — chosen in part because I use them everyday.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Gun

Choosing the right gun can make all the difference in the intense world of Call of Duty: Mobile. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to determine which one suits your play style the best. Don’t underestimate the importance of this decision, as it can greatly affect your performance and, ultimately, your satisfaction with the game.

First off, understanding your preferred play style is crucial when selecting a gun. Are you a close-quarters combat specialist who loves rushing into battle? Or are you more comfortable providing support from a distance? Each gun has its own strengths and weaknesses, so choosing one that aligns with how you want to approach each match can be a game-changer. For example, SMGs like the QQ9 excel in close-range combat due to their high fire rate and mobility, while assault rifles like AK-47s provide versatility for medium to long-range engagements.

Furthermore, keep in mind that choosing a gun extends beyond simply considering its stats. Factors such as recoil control, reload time, and overall handling should not be overlooked. A weapon may have impressive damage numbers but if it kicks too much or takes ages to reload – it might not be worth using in fast-paced matches where split-second decisions can mean life or death. Understanding these intricacies will allow you to make an informed decision that optimizes your gaming experience.

In addition to your play style and the gun’s stats, you will also need to take teammates and game mode into consideration. If you have support from a team or clan, you will want to have a variety of guns when you go into battle together. It doesn’t do much good for you all to go in playing as snipers. The same is true for the different game modes. Since Battle Royale requires different tactics than Multiplayer mode, you will want to make sure and select your weapons to match your needs.

CODM Top 4 Favorite Guns

#1 DL Q33 – Sniper’s Delight

The DL Q33 is a bolt-action sniper rifle that is based on the real-life M200 Intervention by CheyTec. The rifle features a 6-round magazine as its default and it has a 46 RPM rate of fire. It’s rated with high penetration and moderate recoil. The DL Q33 is capable of one-shot belly kills and it’s one of the best choices for close range.

Why it made the list: I’m a sniper first and foremost and the DLQ is my baby. I use it everyday and this gun is the one I use the most by far. Because of that, adding the DL Q33 to this list as #1 was super easy for me.

CODM Top 4 Favorite Guns

#2 Kilo 141 – Powerhouse

Based on the real-life Heckler & Koch HK433, the Kilo 141 is a full automatic assault rifle that features a steady fire rate. It uses a 5.56 NATO caliber bullet and its magazine size is 30 rounds. The rate of fire is 751 RPM with a reload time of 1.34 seconds. Overall, the Kilo is a well-balanced assault rifle that is exceptionally powerful at close range.

Why it made the list: When I need a powerful, fast assault rifle to wreck the other team, the Kilo 141 is my go-to weapon. It provides speed and accuracy along with a lot of customizable options.

CODM Top 4 Favorite Guns

#3 LAPA – Rapid-fire Beast

The LAPA is one of the guns in the submachine gun class and is the in-game version of the LAPA SM-03, its real-life counterpart. The clip holds 30 rounds of 9mm caliber bullets. It is full automatic and causes 35 points of damage. The rate of fire is 697 RPM and it takes 2.4 seconds to reload. The LAPA is exceptionally versatile and its incredible mobility gives the user an edge over other gamers on the battlefield.

Why it made the list: Because I consider myself a sniper, I’ve never really given SMGs much thought. After a clan mate suggested that I might be better with the LAPA than a sniper rifle, I started to realize how reliable the gun actually is. It has power, speed, accuracy, and a fast reload speed.

CODM Top 4 Favorite Guns

#4 AK117

The AK117 is an automatic assault rifle that has a 938 RPM firing rate and has a 30-round magazine size. The reload time is 1.8 – 2.8 seconds depending on whether the magazine is loaded or unloaded. The AK117 is a powerhouse in CODM, providing players with unmatched firepower and versatility. What sets the AK117 apart from other assault rifles is its exceptional recoil control. Even during intense firefights, this beast of a gun remains stable, giving players the ability to land accurate shots consistently.

Why it made the list: Recently this amazing weapon got a Mythic release and it brought me back to using it. The Mythic feels much different then the Epic counterpart and what I love most about the AK117 is how it excels in multiple game modes. Its fast time-to-kill gives me an advantage in one-on-one battles, enabling swift elimination of foes without compromising my own safety. Additionally, the responsive mobility of the AK117 allows for quick movement around maps, offering a tactical advantage when pacing through different terrains.

Conclusion

It is undeniable that the various guns available in Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) greatly contribute to the overall enjoyment and thrill of the game. One key aspect that makes my top 4 guns so enjoyable is their diversity, power, and efficiency. Each gun offers unique characteristics and caters to different play styles, which appeals to a wide range of players.

Each season a new group of guns are listed as the ‘meta’ weapons of the season. The DL Q33 and Kilo 141 are both popular among CODM streamers and even though the LAPA doesn’t usually make their lists, I’m still a big fan of it. The AK117 has been solid throughout the game and the recent addition of its amazing Mythic makes using it even better. If you want to try something new, check out these four guns. They might surprise you with just how good they are.

If you want to know what guns to stay away from, check out my list of Top 3 Guns to Avoid.

MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller 2023 REVIEW https://macsources.com/moga-xp7-x-plus-bluetooth-controller-2023-review/ https://macsources.com/moga-xp7-x-plus-bluetooth-controller-2023-review/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2023 20:21:34 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=115343&preview=true&preview_id=115343

Take control of your gaming experience with the MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller.

Cloud gaming to me represents a golden age of gaming. The idea of having the ability to play your favorite console games on the go is something I’ve always wished was a possibility. With advances in technology like cloud gaming on Xbox Game Pass we are getting closer to a full-fledged console-like experience on the go. PowerA is one such 3rd party company looking to get in on the mobile gaming craze releasing controllers for mobile devices.

About the MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller

The MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller is a gaming controller designed for mobile devices and PC gaming. It offers a traditional console-style layout, with dual analog sticks, triggers, and buttons that provide precision control for gamers. The controller is compatible with Android phones, tablets, and PCs running Windows 10.

The MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller comes equipped with an adjustable phone holder that accommodates devices up to 79mm wide. It also features a built-in rechargeable battery that provides up to 18 hours of gameplay on a single charge. With its ergonomic design and customizable button mapping feature, the MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller is ideal for gamers who want an immersive experience while playing games on their mobile devices or PC.

  • Moga XP7-X+ Bluetooth Controller
MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller

Features

  • Bluetooth + Wired Connectivity
  • Textured Grips
  • Mappable Buttons: Quickly program two Advanced Gaming Buttons on the fly, mid-game. No app is needed.
  • Boost Mode: An integrated 2000mAh power bank lets you wirelessly charge your compatible device while you play
  • 2 Ways to Play: Play in immersive handheld mode or use the genius device stand for tabletop gaming in seconds
  • Mobile and Cloud: Game with an edge on top controller-enabled Android titles and GamePass Ultimate
  • Officially licensed by Xbox: The MOGA XP7-X Plus is licensed by Xbox for quality, reliability, and performance
  • Not compatible with Xbox consoles. The games shown require an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership, sold separately. Wired mode is not officially supported or validated by Xbox.

Performance

Setup via Bluetooth was painless and paired quickly to your mobile device. Charging is done via a micro USB cable provided in the packaging. The controller expands to hold your phone and mimics a Nintendo Switch or you can use the removable phone stand built into the center of the controller. If your device supports wireless charging this can be activated by flipping a switch on the top left of the controller.

It won’t charge your device but will definitely help with battery drain during gaming. You can also plug into your PC with the micro USB cable included for a more traditional console-like experience. Feedback was instantaneous during wired gameplay with no noticeable input delay. The face buttons and left and right bumpers were clicky and felt like an official Xbox controller. There are two programmable pro-style buttons on the rear of the controller.

MOGA XP7-X Plus Bluetooth Controller

The only knock I have against the controller is the left and right trigger buttons. I found it odd that with everything else feeling so premium that PowerA went so cheap on the triggers. Gaming on your mobile device though will ultimately depend on the speed of your internet connection. Input lag while not the controller’s fault is quite obvious when gaming in the cloud.

Certain games fared better than others but any games that require precision will likely leave you frustrated. To that point, I wouldn’t recommend playing competitive games in the cloud. Mobile games that are installed on your device play much better. Not all games support controller use so it’s best to do some research before purchasing the game you are looking at when support was there though performance was solid.

Verdict/ Price and availability 7/10

With textured grips and a premium joystick and face buttons, this controller bears a striking resemblance to an official Xbox product. However, the trigger buttons don’t match the same level of quality and feel rather cheap, which could raise concerns about its durability. Nevertheless, the controller performs as expected. It is reasonably priced when compared to other similar products.

While cloud gaming still has things like input lag to figure out it’s not that far off from a console-like experience. In the meantime, mobile games are available to fill that gap for now. As of the writing of this review, the Moga XP7-X+ is available on Amazon.com for $71.20 and at Bestbuy.com for $75.99.

Top 3 Guns You Should Avoid in Call of Duty Mobile https://macsources.com/top-3-guns-you-should-avoid-in-call-of-duty-mobile/ https://macsources.com/top-3-guns-you-should-avoid-in-call-of-duty-mobile/#comments Mon, 24 Apr 2023 16:24:46 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=114515&preview=true&preview_id=114515 Find out why I detest these weapons in Call of Duty Mobile and why you should avoid them for an improved experience.

When it comes to Call of Duty Mobile (CODM), I am more than an average player. I play this game daily — and sometimes for hours on end. I find myself using all sorts of weapons and many of them have established their place in the game. There are some, however, that should have never been introduced into the game. In fact, the only reason I have used these guns is because I had to in order to level up the other weapons in my collection. Here are my top 3 choices for guns you should avoid in Call of Duty Mobile.

Call of Duty Mobile D13

#1 D13 Sector

The D13 Sector belongs to the Launcher class of weapons and is designed as a secondary weapon. It is featured as a special weapon in Call of Duty: Black Ops III as well as CODM. The D13 was originally released for COD: Black Ops III in October 2016 and in December 2021 for CODM. Originally, the D13 fired an exploding disc that travels for about 5 seconds through the air and has the ability to bounce off surfaces before detonating. In CODM, the D13 has been modified/nerfed from its original iteration. According to callofduty.fandom.com

“The first nerf limits how many times it can bounce around in a map, now only being able to bounce three times before outright disappearing. The second nerf is the lack of an explosion. The third nerf is the progressive damage dropoff depending on how many people the disc has gone through, suffering a drop of 60 damage after it collides with one enemy, meaning an enemy hit behind the first enemy will suffer 40 damage. The fourth nerf is that every time the disc collides with an enemy, the disc will bounce off, though it has a chance to collide with an enemy behind the killed enemy.”

My opinion: This piece of dog dung is by far the worst weapon in this game to use. It’s even worse if you want to level it up to gold or diamond, as I have. It has one shot and is barely usable. I can say from using this terrible abomination that it was placed in the game to make you hate life.

Call of Duty Mobile NA45

#2 NA-45

The NA-45 is a sniper rifle that exists in both Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: Mobile. This rifle was added to CODM as a part of the Season 11 Anniversary update. It uses exploding rounds to defeat enemies -> the first round is a primer that acts as a tracker and the second round is the detonator. Therefore, you have to use two shots at an enemy in order to take them out. The projectiles cannot penetrate surfaces — they stick to whatever they are fired at AND if the two rounds are fired at different surfaces, an explosion will not occur. Even though the NA-45 has a fast-fired rate, it only carries two shots per mag. All of these factors make it a very difficult weapon to use let alone accomplish any tasks with.

My opinion: I struggled with whether or not to place the NA-45 as number one on my list. But, after a long pause, I remembered that I was able to achieve MVP in a match with the NA-45 in a multiplayer match against real people, whereas with the D-13, you are lucky to kill a bot with it. The NA-45 was placed in the game to make getting Damascus an absolute pain. Getting headshots is no big deal, but in order to get long shots, you have to get headshots as well, or they don’t count — even if you shoot someone from across the map. In addition to that, there is no documentation that states your longshots have to be headshots. That’s something I just figured out through experience. The devs in CODM must laugh each time someone picks up this trash gun.

Call of Duty Mobile MSMC

#3 MSMC and Pharo

Third on my list of terrible weapons in CODM is actually a tie between the MSMC and the Pharo. Both weapons are classified as submachine guns and features in Call of Duty: Black Ops games prior to CODM. The MSMC (aka — Mini INSAS) does have the second highest fire rate of all the guns in the game and has high mobility, but its weighed down by a heavy vertical and horizontal recoil pattern. Even though it can kill fast at close range, it suffers from a lack of range overall as well as problematic recoil. The Pharo was added to CODM as part of the Season 2 update. It features a 4-round burst and has a high damage rate. Unfortunately, it has a ‘bouncy’ recoil which limits its effectiveness.

My opinion: With unmanageable recoil for long shots, these guns are not useful for long shots, nor are they fun to use. During my run for Damascus, I found these guns are the worst SMGs, and I could not wait to stop using them.

Conclusion

Choosing the right gun for Call of Duty Mobile is essential for success and enjoyable gameplay. These are just three of the worst weapons in the game and should be avoided based on their limited range, horrible recoil/handling, and limited mag volume. I find CODM much more enjoyable if you focus on guns like the DL Q33, which offers great performance and accuracy. I do suggest that you spend time trying the different guns out so that you can find a weapon setup that suits your play style best. I know there are some other really bad guns in CODM so tell me…what is your least favorite gun to use in the game?

For many people, video games are a pure source of entertainment and something to do in their free time. While the options were much more limited growing up, the opportunity to experience video gameplay is around every corner. Everyone carries a personal gaming device in their pocket — their smartphone. This gives us the unique opportunity to quickly and easily connect with others around the world through online multiplayer gameplay. This was, in fact, one of the main ways that people kept connections with people outside their homes during major lockdowns of the pandemic.

One of the most popular mobile games that emerged during that time, was Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM). It’s a free-to-play first-person shooter (FPS) game for Android and iOS users. The game was originally released in October 2019 and in its first month, the game saw more than 148 million downloads with a reported $54 million in revenue. This made Call of Duty: Mobile the largest mobile game launch in history. CODM has consistently appeared as a top download in app stores and that’s how it caught my eye in early 2022. Even though I’ve always enjoyed online gaming, I ended up starting Call of Duty: Mobile for a very different reason — to save my life.

Call of Duty: Mobile Saved My Life

My Story

I am an introvert. I typically like to spend my time alone or with just one or two people at a time. I guess I’m what you would consider a loner. Because of this personality trait, online gaming has been one of the best ways possible for me to discover and bond with others who have similar interests. It requires very little of me ‘putting myself out there’ in order to meet others. In my late 20s/early 30s, that was my main method of socializing. I had a small group of close online friends but spent most of my in-person time with my grandmother, who raised me, and my fiancé.

Due to various illnesses including cancer, I spent many years taking care of my grandmother. She lived with us and because I was dedicated to spending as much quality time with her as possible, online gaming fell by the wayside. I kept to myself and really focused on caring for and spending time with my grandmother. Between her and my fiancé, I really did not care too much about socializing outside our house.

Unfortunately, we lost my grandmother on November 13, 2021, after cancer that we were unaware of spread through her body. By the time we found out about the illness, it was too late for any treatment to help and she passed away at home. I was devastated. I still am. Until her death, there wasn’t a day of my life that didn’t involve at least a phone call from her. I spent more time with her than her own children did. Needless to say, her passing caused me a lot of deep pain.

I pretty much shut down and just went through the motions of a day — and that’s really only because my fiancé kept me moving. I did not want to eat, work, talk, or do anything. I would get out of bed and move to the couch. I would stay there until it was time for bed and then I would move back to bed. Sometimes I would sit in her spot on the couch and just stare out the sliding glass door. The TV would usually be on so that I could focus on something other than my thoughts. Sometimes I would watch random documentaries on WWII. The sadness would not let go. I have always dealt with some form of depression, but this was more than I had ever felt before.

Call of Duty Mobile Saved My Life
M13 – Morningstar

From November 2021 to April 2022, this was how my days were spent. I would get up, grab my laptop, and sit on the couch. I would get some work done and then just sit there. I would think about what I could have done and what I should have done, and I would think about how much I wanted to end it so I would stop feeling the pain of loss. While updating my iPhone one day in January 2022, I saw CODM in the App Store. I decided to download it as it might give me something else to focus on. I gave it a go, but after playing a round with my fingers, I decided it wasn’t for me. I closed the app and fell back into my hell on Earth.

Then, one day while I was skimming through YouTube, I ran into a video of someone using a controller with CODM. We had the RiotPWR ESL iOS Gaming Controller that needed to be reviewed and I decided to give it a go. While Robyn completed the review, she did ask me to try it with Call of Duty: Mobile so that I could provide that insight for the review. This is what she wrote about my experience with that controller.

“I am using an iPhone 12 Pro and my fiancé has an iPhone 13 Pro. He is a first-person shooter gamer so I asked him to give the RiotPWR controller a try, too. He was happy to do so because he had Call of Duty on his phone but really hadn’t enjoyed playing it much because it was too difficult to control his firearms in the game with the on-screen controls. He plugged the controller in and again, without needing to download the app, he was able to not only start playing COD, but he was also able to win. He joined a group of people and ended up with the MVP shot at the end of the round. I was on the opposite end of the house and heard him shout. He rushed to where I was to tell me what happened and was thrilled that he was able to enjoy the mobile version of the game. He said the controller gave him the ability to have gun control, which he was lacking without the controller.”

https://macsources.com/riotpwr-esl-ios-gaming-controller-review/

That particular controller houses the iPhone in a mount on the top of the controller. Even though the RiotPWR controller didn’t seem like a good fit for me, it did open my eyes to what gameplay would be like with a controller instead of the touch controls. CODM was more appealing to me at this point and after I settled into a controller I did like (Razer Kishi V1 for iOS), playing the game really helped me to focus my thoughts on something other than the loss of my grandmother.

Call of Duty Mobile Saved My Life
SVD – Toxicant

Finding Purpose in CODM

I got really good with the M13, and one day I ran into someone using the SVD and got sniped. It was an eye-opening experience for me. I wanted that gun, and I wanted to snipe. So, I put my M13 to rest and went all in on the SVD. After a little while with it, I became really, really good with it. I was so good that I must have upset a few people in the game because I started to get random invites to join some people with their games, which I ignored. I typically just played by myself because I didn’t want to worry about talking to anyone. At that point, I just wanted to use CODM as a coping mechanism to deal with my depression.

Then, one day in April 2022, after the same person sent me an invite a few days in a row, I decided to join his group. I just assumed they were going to cuss me out for sniping them repeatedly and I thought maybe I could get a laugh from that. I had not laughed in a long time, so I thought, “What the heck?” Instead, I found that it was two guys — Mo and Goldballs — who just wanted to play with the guy who sniped them rather than get sniped by him over and over again. Before I could leave the group, I heard them bantering with each other, and it amused me.

I kept my mic muted, but I was entertained by listening to those two guys. It was like I was watching the two old men on the balcony who always rag on the Muppets. I decided to stay and play. They ended up inviting other random people to play (Jordy, Dominion, BloodNinja, and others) from time to time. At some point, I decided to unmute my mic when they were talking about something I knew about and could speak on. I think it was a bit awkward because I had been playing with them for a few weeks without ever speaking. This was the start of some great friendships with people who are now like family to me.

Call of Duty Mobile Saved My Life
DL Q33 – Bass Booster

Since that time, I have only missed one or two days of gaming with or talking to this awesome group of people. Over time, some people have come and gone, but Mo and I have grown the group to include Sammy, Lesley, Damien, Quin, TJ, Aubree, Bill, Manny, and Silvia. These people turned my life around. I end up playing with most of them daily and without them, I honestly don’t know if I would be here. This free-to-play mobile game provided a group of friends that I didn’t think I needed. Since we were playing together so much, we started a clan called “MakeÜQuit” because we ended up making other players so mad that they will leave the game in the middle of a match.

Our group has become so much more than random friends on a game — we are a makeshift family. We even have decided to do a friend meet-up this summer in Nashville. Growing up, I never felt this close to anyone other than my grandparents. I always had friends, but none of them were people I would go out of my way to talk to daily. CODM has given me this, and I am grateful for it. I am grateful for Mo and Goldballs, who broke me out of my shell and helped me deal with my depression.

Early on, they didn’t know what was going on as I kept my grandmother’s passing to myself. I eventually did let them know about my situation and thanked them for inviting me to play with them. Without these two, there is a good chance I would have ended my life. CODM and these two random guys gave me a new outlook on life, and even though I am still hurting inside from the loss, I am able to move about my day like a normal person.

Looking Ahead: New Opportunities

As my gameplay has progressed, I have migrated from the Razer Kishi and my iPhone to my iPad Pro and an Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless controller. I even have my iPad hardwired into a 43″ monitor so I can kick back in my chair and play without my eyes hurting. I know it might seem extreme but it makes me happy and being happy is something I thought I lost completely in November 2021. In addition to changing up my equipment, I continue to seek out new challenges within the game.

Call of Duty: Mobile takes guns and maps from other Call of Duty games and modifies them for the mobile platform. It is a fully-baked Call of Duty game that can be played on phones, tablets, and even PCs (with an emulator). The movement in the game is fluid and the gunplay is outstanding. We play on the global server but the Chinese and Garena version of the game differs slightly from the global server. CODM has Mythic and Legendary guns that have super cool effects that make the game more fun when killing the enemy. I recently found that the other Servers, like Garena and China, sometimes get Mythic and Legendary guns we don’t get in the global server.

Call of Duty Mobile Saved My Life
My iPad/Monitor Setup

Since I started really playing CODM and discovering these kill effects, I got on a roll with purchasing these weapons and currently own almost every gun available on the global server. This shopping spree really began as a way to try and get the Bass Booster. Users can only access these Mythic and Legendary weapons through a process called Lucky Draw. In order to complete a single Lucky Draw, a user has to purchase CP, which is the digital currency used in CODM.

As I’ve mentioned, the game is free to play and you can gain different guns through the course of playing the game, but in order to get these special weapons, you have to purchase this digital currency, which can be $100+ USD for each CP bundle. This is how CODM makes its revenue. Needless to say, I’ve dropped a lot of real dollars into this game trying to get the one gun I really want since the Lucky Draw is randomized. I hesitate to add it all up since I know it would be a sickening amount of money.

Each of the guns I own has been played with and thoroughly tested. At this point in time, I have received Damascus camo for completing camo challenges in the game. I have also completed Diamond Camo challenges for all of the weapons, too. I have done this for both my accounts (yes, I have two accounts). Given that I have invested so much time and money into this game, recent news from Microsoft that suggested CODM might be phased out with the release of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile was devastating to me. As it turned out, other members of our group felt the same way. I was really nervous that everyone would just throw up their hands and say, “Have a nice life!” Instead, we all decided we would give Warzone a try if that needed to happen just so that we could keep playing together.

We actually started testing it out together on Xbox and we all found it to be a much different gaming environment than Call of Duty: Mobile. That said, we felt that if we had to make it work, we could. I will say that the bots in that game are no joke. I wish CODM would update the paint-sniffing bots they have now and give us more aggressive bots that play more like real people. Heck, I think it would be funny to see the bots use melee weapons as well.

Conclusion: Bringing Balance Back

Even though my grief is still very much a part of my daily life, I have other things to look forward to as well. My group of friends plays nightly. We text each other randomly during the day. We encourage each other. We congratulate each other. We check up on each other. We are family. And, thankfully, we have some reassurance from Activision, too. On March 13, 2023, they sent out a Tweet that stated, “We … intend to continue supporting the game with a robust roadmap of fresh new CODM content, activities, and updates for the long haul.”

As long as Activision stays true to its statement and keeps CODM running, I believe my group of friends will continue to play, and so will I.

Gamevice FLEX for iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/gamevice-flex-for-iphone-mobile-gaming-controller-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/gamevice-flex-for-iphone-mobile-gaming-controller-2022-review/#respond Thu, 22 Dec 2022 21:15:36 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=113335&preview=true&preview_id=113335

Gamevice FLEX enhances the mobile gaming experience.

With the growing popularity of mobile versions of major gaming titles such as Call of Duty or Fortnite, there has also been a growing demand for controllers that work in tandem with mobile phones. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to try out several of these accessories including

Each type of controller has its own unique feel for gaming and if you prefer a certain console controller, you might favor one style over another. Personally, I prefer Xbox controllers so I tend to lean towards the controllers that are “made for Xbox.” One of the most recent entries into that group is the Gamvice FLEX, which is available for Android or iOS devices.

Gamevice FLEX for iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

About Gamevice & FLEX

Gamevice was one of the original mobile gaming accessory manufacturers. They entered the industry in 2012 as Wikipad and in 2014, Wikipad announced its new controller called “Gamevice.” It was a detachable controller with a classic D-pad, twin triggers, A, B, X, and Y Buttons and dual analog sticks. In January 2017, a new Gamevice controller was released to work with the iPhone 7.

Gamevice is one of the industry leaders for mobile gaming accessories and over the years, they have really improved their designs. Through their efforts, Gamevice has literally transformed mobile devices into full-fledged portable gaming platforms. Their latest release, the FLEX, takes the popular design of the Razer Kishi, which was designed through a partnership between Gamevice and Razer, and modifies it so that it will accommodate phone cases.

Gamevice FLEX for iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

The Gamevice FLEX launched officially in late October this year. It’s designed specifically to work with your iPhone — with or without a case on it. This is a HUGE differentiator between the FLEX and pretty much every other mobile gaming controller on the market. Another big feature the FLEX offers is the ability to fold up into a very compact package — rather than being a large rigid controller. Many mobile gaming controllers end up being approximately the same size at the Nintendo Switch. That can be rather inconvenient when you are traveling.

Main Features

  • Use with or without a phone case
  • Comes complete with an adapter kit to ensure the phone fits snuggly inside the FLEX
  • Low-latency direct connection
  • Console level controls
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Pass-through charging using a Lightning connector
  • Collapses for portability and storage
  • Works with Remote Play (XBox, PlayStation, or Steam Link)
  • Free Trial of Xbox Game Pass included
  • GameVice app gives users access to Xbox, GeForce NOW, Stadia, PlayStation, Luna, and iOS games in one place

Pricing & Availability

The FLEX controller is available for purchase through gamevice.com or Amazon. The list price is $109.95 for the iPhone version of the controller.

Gamevice FLEX for iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

User Experience

The controller comes in a thick retail box. There is an image of the device on the front of the box in use along with proper branding. Since the Gamevice FLEX is available for both iPhone and Android mobile phones, there is a label (in both English and French) that dictates the controller is for the iPhone. Another piece of branding on the box is from Xbox. This controller is designed to be used with Xbox content and it is sort of designed as a companion to a traditional Xbox controller.

When you open the box, you’ll find a small cardboard piece strapped across the top of the controller. There is a QR code printed on it labeled “Quick Start.” This QR code links to Gamevice’s website and tutorials on how to install your phone in the controller. The reverse side of the card has an illustrated guide for installation using the phone and case adapters.

The case adapters can get a little confusing. When it comes down to it, it’s really a trial-and-error game. Gamevice does include another card that is designed to help the user determine which adapters will work best with your phone and its case. I have the Nomad Sport Case on my iPhone 14 Pro so it was a little difficult to find a good fit. The case is on the thicker side and I found that it was sort of in-between sizes on the card.

Gamevice FLEX for iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

I found the appropriate adapters and snapped them into place. After that, I slid the iPhone into the Lightning port side and then stretched the opposite side of the FLEX controller around the top of the phone/case. In my case, the fit was secure but there was still some room on either side of the phone since the FLEX is designed to be a universal fit for all iPhone models. Even though there was a little bit of wiggle room, I didn’t have any issues with the phone sliding out of the controller.

I found the controller to be very responsive while I was playing. I tested it out with a couple of games — Lego Star Wars and Call of Duty Mobile. The former is more action/adventure while COD Mobile is a first-person, multiplayer combat game. Both mobile games are designed so that a player can utilize on-screen controls to maneuver in the game, but I have found that adding a mobile controller — like the FLEX — helps the experience quite a bit.

Gamevice FLEX for iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

The FLEX is remarkably similar to an Xbox controller, with many of the same features and design elements. Those who have used the Razer Kishi v1 before will find the FLEX to be very familiar, as the two controllers share a lot of the same characteristics. The FLEX is designed with ergonomics in mind, and its comfortable grip and intuitive layout of the buttons and sticks make it easy to use.

Since it connects to the iPhone using a Lightning connection, it allows you to play your favorite games without any lag or stuttering. I would say that the FLEX is now my favorite mobile gaming accessory.

Conclusion

Overall, the FLEX is an excellent controller that provides a great gaming experience. I love that it folds up to be compact for travel and you don’t have to worry about charging it since it gets power from a direct Lightning connection to the iPhone. I’ve found that my gaming experiences are greatly improved thanks to using the FLEX.

TCP Pro PS5 Controller 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/tcp-pro-ps5-controller-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/tcp-pro-ps5-controller-2022-review/#respond Mon, 07 Nov 2022 18:51:31 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=112707&preview=true&preview_id=112707 Get A Competitive Edge the TCP Pro Modified PS5 Controller

Anyone who’s ever played a video game can tell you that the right controller is crucial to a good gaming experience. For some people, that means a standard controller that comes with the console. For others, it means a custom controller.

A custom controller for gaming can provide a number of advantages over a standard controller. First, a custom controller can be designed to fit the specific needs of the gamer. This can include adding extra buttons or changing the layout of the existing buttons to better suit the gamer’s style of play. Second, a custom controller can be built with higher quality components than a standard controller, resulting in a more durable and longer-lasting product.

There are a few ways to get a custom gaming controller. One way is to buy one that is already made by the original manufacturer (i.e. Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2). Another way is to find a third-party company that makes custom controllers such as The Controller People.

About The Controller People

The Controller People is a gaming company founded in 2016 in London, England. They focus on providing the best gaming experience possible by designing customized modifications for Sony Playstation controllers. Their products are designed by professional gamers and they are constantly innovating solutions to meet the needs of the gaming community.

The Controller People have a variety of services including pro controllers, pre-made PS5 controllers, and the option to customize your own personal controller. The two Pro-level controllers they offer are the TCP Pro and the TCP Ultimate. This review is focusing on the TCP Pro.

TCP Pro PS5 Controller

Main Features

The standard PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller is the base of the TCP Pro controller from The Controller People. It has a built-in microphone and headset jack along with a built-in battery, integrated speaker, motion sensor, and a create button. The TCP Pro comes with The Controller People’s three main features that put players in a position to improve their gameplay.

  • ClickSticks: The most comfortable “paddle” system out there. ClickSticks are extra buttons that are placed at the back of the controller. ClickSticks are a must-have for any serious gamer, enabling you to jump and slide-shot with ease.
  • I.A.S.: The Interchangeable Analogue System allows you to customize your thumb stick height using a plug-in and pull-out system. It comes with tall and short sizes that you can mix and match at any time.
  • Digital Triggers: Reduce the time it takes to pull the triggers by swapping them for a digital alternative. Digital Triggers turn your triggers into something similar to a mouse click. Superfast and super efficient. Perfect for shooting single-fire guns at rapid speed.

The TCP Ultimate includes all the features of the TCP Pro and adds in a few additional modifications. Here is a breakdown of the differences between the two models.

Pricing & Availability

The TCP Pro PS5 Controller is available exclusively from thecontrollerpeople.com. It is currently priced at $156.07 USD (as of publishing this article).

User Experience

When the TCP Pro PS5 Controller arrived, I was a bit confused. It arrived in a standard DualSense box. The shipping box didn’t have any information on it either. The box was not sealed with plastic wrap. So, it looked as though it was a used DualSense box. Across the closure of the box was a “The Controller People” logo sticker. This was what indicated that the modified controller was possiibly inside the box.

When I opened the box, I found the controller wrapped up in some protective packaging with the TCP sticker on it, the official PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller instruction manual, and extra joystick caps.

Right away, I recognized the difference between the standard DualSense controller and the TCP Pro. The L2 and R2 buttons on the TCP Pro controller are more clickable than the standard DualSense triggers. This is the ‘digital trigger’ modification that is described above. Because of this feature, users’ fingers have much less distance to travel when they press that button.

TCP Pro PS5 Controller

The I.A.S. does give you the easy option of raising or lowering your joysticks, but the starting point is still higher than the standard DualSense controller’s sticks. I would say that the TCP Pro joysticks are slightly smoother than the standard controller, but the general feel and click are about the same. It is easy to pop the caps on and snap them back on. I’m not sure if it’s part of their standard shipping practices but the shortest cap was pre-installed on my controller.

The ClickSticks in my opinion is really what makes the TCP Pro stand apart from the standard DualSense controller. This is something that Xbox users have been able to take advantage of for a while since Microsoft has a pro line of controllers available. The ClickSticks jut out of the back of the controller and are in the ideal position for the middle fingers of each hand to reach.

My fiancé who plays a lot with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 took a look at this modded controller and felt that the installed ClickSticks were long. On the Xbox controller, the paddles are flat. So the feel of the TCP Pro ClickSticks was very different to him. In my testing, I found them to be placed in a good spot and comfortable to use.

TCP Pro PS5 Controller

I tested this controller out with Call of Duty on the PlayStation 5 and Call of Duty: Mobile on my iPad Pro. If you have the option to do this, I recommend it because it’s a great playing experience. Even though it has a few add-ons the gameplay experience feels the same to me as it does with the standard DualSense controller. The weight feels the same but the more mechanical click feel on the L2 and R2 triggers are amazing and having the added ClickSticks is great for games like COD.

My iPad Pro recognized the controller as a PS5 DualSense controller and CODM connected the controller with no issues. The ClickSticks were automatically mapped to certain functions but reprogramming was no problem. The controller was responsive and even though it didn’t have much of a charge out of the box, I was able to connect a USB-C cable (not included) and charge it while I played.

Conclusion

Even though the controller was a surprise, it seems worthwhile if you are trying to enhance your gaming performance. I really love the feel of the standard DualSense controller and since the modifications don’t change that at all, I’m really impressed with the TCP Pro. And, based on what you get with this modification, it’s not a bad investment.

TCP Pro PS5 Controller

PlayStation has plans to launch a pro-level controller in early 2023 but the cost is 28% higher than the TCP Pro. So, if you want to change up your performance but don’t want to jump to the $200+ investment, the TCP Pro is a good option. The Controller People also offer modification accessories that allow users to modify their existing controllers. The triggers and ClickSticks do require soldering, but if you are so inclined and have the technical skills to do it, that is another option.

The TCP Pro controller for PS5 is a great gaming accessory. It’s comfortable to hold, has great build quality, and its button layout is very user-friendly. If you’re looking for a great controller to use with your PS5, the TCP Pro is definitely worth checking out.

Navigate through the parked train to flank enemies from one platform to the next, or climb up to the southern power position and fire at enemies below. However you approach the map, make sure you’re not on the tracks when the bullet train comes barreling through.

New Perk — Spycraft: Give your foes a taste of their own medicine using Spycraft to hack land-based enemy items, turning them to your own use. Earn the Perk through a Seasonal Challenge for the ability to hack the Trophy System, Trip Mine, SAM Turret, Sentry Gun, Transform Shield, and Munitions Box. Once the manual hack is complete, they’ll start working in your favor.

New Battle Royale Class — Igniter:

Lure your enemies into fiery pits using the new Igniter Battle Royale class, capable of laying down flaming tar traps that burn and slow enemy Operators who enter the ring of fire. Lasting for several seconds each, these traps are perfect for blocking off access to important locations, whether you’re attempting a clean getaway or holding a position against rushing enemies.

The Igniter cannot be damaged or slowed by their own traps, and they additionally gain added resistance to fire and explosive damage.

User Experience

The XP5-i+ Controller comes in a box with an image of the product on the front. The front of the box also lists some of the main features of the device including the integrated 3000mAh power bank, mappable buttons, and detachable phone clip. The back of the box shows a diagram of the controller and some multilingual descriptions of the product. Inside the box, you’ll find the controller, the detachable clip, a USB-C to USB-A adapter, and a manual.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to try out several different types of mobile gaming controllers and one of the things I found unique about this controller right away was that it provides the user the option to connect via Bluetooth or with a cable. Most of the controllers I’ve seen have given users the option to connect one way or the other — not both. The other unique feature of this controller is that there is no companion app. This made using the controller much easier than some of its counterparts.

PowerA MOGA XP5-i Plus Bluetooth Controller

The first test I ran was to connect the controller to my iPhone 13 Pro via Bluetooth. This was a very easy process. You switch the Bluetooth switch to the ‘on’ position (where you can see green) and press/hold the pairing button until the LED under the MOGA logo is flashing quickly. The pairing button is located next to the R2 trigger button. Once the LED was flashing, the controller appeared as an option in my phone’s Bluetooth menu and I was connected immediately.

I’ve found that one of the best tests for these mobile gaming controllers is to play Call of Duty: Mobile because there are some controllers that work and some that don’t. I was actually surprised to find that the XP5-i Plus worked with no additional modifications. I started the game up and entered a training session to test out if the controller would work normally. It did so then I joined the multiplayer game option. I played a couple of rounds and thought the controller responded really well. I didn’t notice any lag with it and because of the controller’s shape, it was comfortable to play with.

PowerA MOGA XP5-i Plus Bluetooth Controller

Even though the MOGA controller can be used hard-wired, it does not come with a cable. Even though I have extra Lightning cables laying around, it would have been nice if one was included. After I attached a USB-C to Lightning cable to the controller and my phone, I booted up Lego Star Wars. This is a game I have played many times with a connected controller. It worked really well with the MOGA controller, too. I didn’t have to do anything special other than turn the controller on to get it to work.

The phone mount for the controller is a little different than some designs I’ve seen. This one wraps around the bottom of the controller and snaps into place. The phone rest is adjustable, but the joints where it can be tilted are tightened by knobs. It’s functional, but not quite as elegant as some other types of mechanisms.

Conclusion

I’ve been very impressed with this controller. It’s moderately priced in comparison to other mobile gaming controllers and it offers more features than some of them do. The only question I have is how long it will last. It seems to be built really well so I would think that if you take care of your gaming gear, it will last for a long while. I would easily recommend this controller and would get it again if the occasion called for it.

RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/riotpwr-xbox-edition-cloud-gaming-controller-for-ios-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/riotpwr-xbox-edition-cloud-gaming-controller-for-ios-2022-review/#respond Mon, 29 Aug 2022 17:38:05 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=111538&preview=true&preview_id=111538

Console-style gaming controller enhances your gaming experience.

In recent years, the mobile gaming industry has exploded in popularity. A growing number of people are playing games on their smartphones and tablets. While some mobile games can be played with a touch screen, others are better suited for a physical controller.

So, is mobile gaming improved with a controller? The answer is yes and no. It depends on the type of game you are playing. I also think it depends on the type of controller you are using. There are currently two main types of gaming controllers — gamepads and console controllers.

The gamepad-style controller provides the user with an extension of their mobile device while the console-style controller is a separate device altogether. There are some console controllers that connect wirelessly while others — like the RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS — provide a wired gaming experience. So, how does the RiotPWR Xbox Edition measure up for mobile gaming?

RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS

Details

The RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS is a console-style controller designed for use with iOS devices.

“This classic design provides a solid comfortable grip, while the two clickable joysticks, a D-pad and a host of buttons provide enhanced control, this is the first and only MFi controller to feature a dedicated Xbox button, meaning your mobile gaming experience is now as close to console gaming as ever before.”

The controller operates with plug-n-play technology but does have a companion app. Thanks to the Lightning connection, there is no lag during gameplay, and passthrough charging is available to keep your device powered while you play.

Main Features

  • Supreme precision & control: The mobile cloud gaming console comes with Xbox, menu & option buttons, an improved 8-way D-Pad, L3 R3 triggers, joysticks, and removable support post that let you exercise enhanced control and tactical accuracy. It comes with a new share button that lets you stream and record gameplay to social media along with Audio DAC and a headphone socket for chatting as you play.
  • Uninterrupted gaming: Skip the frustration of lagging displays and game latency that totally ruin the gaming spirit. The lightning-connected wired gamepad lets you enjoy smooth gaming sessions without being interrupted by annoying glitches and lags.
  • No more drained batteries: What’s more annoying than glitches? Drained batteries can force you to leave a furious battle. Thanks to the pass-through charging technology of the mobile controller, you can enjoy hours of gaming while the phone charges as you play!
  • Redesigned ZeroG stand: The handheld game console comes with a removable mobile support post for enhanced comfort while at play. The ergonomic ZeroG stand provides a “zero gravity” effect so that you can play for longer periods without straining your hands. It’s all about enjoying the ultimate gaming experience!

My Experience

I admit that I’m not a typical ‘gamer.’ I enjoy video games and my gaming history goes back to the 1980s. My family had a Commodore 64 system that was destroyed by an unruly pair of pets that had frequent disagreements. I also lobbied my parents for a Super Nintendo when the gaming system was first released. That said, I don’t typically play games on a daily basis. I only mention that because I believe some of my physical comfort levels may be a bit skewed in the sense that my hands are out of shape. With that in mind, let’s take a look at this wonderful gaming accessory.

Xbox Edition vs. ESL

Several months ago, I reviewed the RiotPWR ESL iOS Gaming Controller. It is designed to mimic the design of the Xbox controller, but it’s not an exact replica like this controller. The main design differences between the two include the home button and the LED indicators on the face of the controller. In addition to that, the Xbox controller is white, green, and black while the ESL controller also has yellow accents. Finally, the Xbox edition controller comes with one month of Xbox Game Pass free.

RiotPWR has several console-style controllers available for both Android and iOS devices. They are very similar and they are designed to be clones of Xbox controllers rather than a Playstation layout.

Installation & Ludu App

The controller, like the ESL Controller, is bus powered and once it’s plugged into your device, it will power on. The cable is 26 inches long and is permanently affixed to the controller. This is one of the features that distinguishes it from a standard wireless Xbox controller.

I have used both wired and Bluetooth controllers with my iOS device and I’ve actually found the wired option to be better for me. With such a long cable, you don’t necessarily have to have the phone mounted to the controller while you play.

For example, I have a MagSafe charging stand on my desk that I mount my phone too, and then I just plug the controller into the phone and sit back in my chair. I would exercise caution if you choose this option for playing. If you move around a lot while you play, it may not be the best option as you don’t want your phone to end up jerked around.

RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS

The mount attachment simply snaps into its mounting port which when not in use is covered by a silicone flap. While it is very secure when in use, it is easily removed for storage or if you want to use the controller without the iOS devices mounted to it.

The Ludu app is a companion app for the controller. It is not required for gameplay but it does make it easy to determine which games are compatible with the controller. The app is free to download and use and is available for both Android and iOS. When you open the app, you can browse through the selections available to use with the controller.

If the game is already installed on your device, there is a dialogue that will pop-up showing that the game can be opened. If it is not installed, you can select ‘Get’ and the game will be opened in the device’s App Store. Even though the Ludu app shows users what is confirmed as compatible with the controller, other games may still work with it. I also noticed that the Ludu app will show what titles are available through Apple Arcade.

RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS

One thing I will note is that some games have restrictions built into them about what controllers can be used during gameplay. One of those games is Call of Duty: Mobile. There are a lot of iOS controller options available but not all of them work natively with COD. In fact, COD only lists Xbox and Playstation controllers as the ‘approved’ controllers that are supported with the game.

That said, many of the other third-party controllers that have been released do work with the platform — including the RiotPWR controller. There are some controllers, however, that require additional setup to use fully with the game. To make sure that I didn’t have any issues with the controller/game compatibility, I opened it through the Ludu app. It worked perfectly.

Comfort

One of the things about this controller that seems off to me is how lightweight it is. Because it’s designed like an Xbox controller it sits well in the hands and the grip feels natural. But, the controller is very light and when you add the phone to the mount, sometimes it feels a little top-heavy. This wasn’t a deal-breaker to me, but something to keep in mind if you play for long periods of time. I also noticed that my hands got a little stiff after playing for a while. I think this is more of a symptom of my hands being out of shape for gaming than a fault of the controller though.

RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS

Power Drain

Since the controller runs off of bus power, I wasn’t sure how to address the ‘battery life’ since it doesn’t really have its own battery. So, I will refer to this as power drain. The controller pulls power directly from the device it is connected to. So, naturally, this is going to affect your device’s battery level.

I don’t have a great basis for comparison on how different controllers affect an iPhone battery life, but I can say that after 2.5 hours of consistent gaming, my iPhone 12 Pro’s battery was down to 60%. I know that it was very close to 100% when I started. With a 40% power drain after 150 minutes, that ends up being around 0.27% of your battery that you are spending every minute.

Based on the specs for the iPhone 12 Pro (up to 17 hours for video playback), you should expect to burn approximately 0.09% per minute if you are watching videos. Gaming is more intensive, but I wasn’t expecting to have my battery drained 3 times faster than with standard video playback.

Conclusion

The RiotPWR Xbox Edition Cloud Gaming Controller for iOS is a lot of fun and I certainly felt as though my gaming experience was enhanced by using it. As is the case with all controllers, there are pluses and minuses to weigh. I personally love that it feels so much like an Xbox controller and that you have a hard-wired connection with it — without having to use a gamepad-style controller. Based on other third-party console-style controllers for use with iOS devices, I think its price is very fair ($70 at the time of publishing this article).

GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/gamesir-x3-type-c-gaming-controller-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/gamesir-x3-type-c-gaming-controller-2022-review/#respond Fri, 19 Aug 2022 20:46:36 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=111433&preview=true&preview_id=111433 The controller provides an enhanced gaming experience for mobile gamers.

Even though there are an estimated two billion mobile gamers in the world, it’s not a hobby that I’ve picked up since it has become popular. Then, about six months ago, I decided to pick up my phone and try playing Call of Duty: Mobile. I found a community of gamers that have become like a second family to me.

One of the things that had been holding me back from joining online gaming was the requirement that I use on-screen touch controls rather than a handheld controller. Fortunately, there are several accessory companies like have created some remarkable gamepads for mobile phones.

These robust devices connect to a phone either through Bluetooth or a wired connection. The gamepad-style mobile controller is designed to wrap around a phone and make it feel a lot like the Nintendo Switch.

Because I’ve enjoyed playing online with my clan so much, I’ve found my phone tends to overheat quite a bit. Portable gaming coolers that attach magnetically do a good job of disseminating that heat, but they are a little cumbersome. That’s why I’m thrilled that GameSir integrated a cooler into their latest gamepad for Android phones — the X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller.

GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

About the X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

The X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller is designed specifically for mobile gaming. It aims to ensure that gamers no longer need to make the compromise or decision between a mobile controller or a phone cooler – combining both into one device.

According to GameSir, “the phone cooler can allow up to a 12°C drop in the CPU temperature and 24°C drop in surface temperature and the wired connection maintains a zero-input delay whilst in use.” This controller is meant for pro-level gaming. It features bumpers, triggers, face buttons, and a D-pad that all come with Kailh switches that are resistant to up to 3 million clicks.

Pricing & Availability

The GameSir X3 controller is being offered through GameSir’s website and Amazon. At the time this article is being published, its list price is $99.99 USD.

GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

User Experience

The GameSir X3 Type-C comes wrapped up in a hefty travel case that is deep enough to carry its USB-C cable and accessory box. One side of the case is dedicated space for the controller and the other is a mesh pocket for accessories. Because the controller’s fan requires a power source to function, I think finding a small power bank to carry in your travel case would be very beneficial.

The gamepad is spring-loaded and will extend to accommodate different sizes of smartphones. It does not, however, collapse or fold up for storage. This is one of the reasons I’ve very happy that a case is included with the controller. It keeps it safe from environmental damage and makes it easier to take more places.

The USB-C plug attachment on the gamepad is flexible and can be bent (gently) so that the user can install their phone easily. I tested this device out with two different Android phones — the Sony Experia 10 and the Google Pixel 6 Pro. Both phones fit easily in the gamepad.

GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

Connecting the controller to the phone is not difficult, but getting the mobile games to work with the controller can be a chore. As I mentioned, my game of choice is Call of Duty: Mobile. Activision has very strict rules about what controllers can be used by gamers. In order to make the controller work with the game, you have to map the buttons, triggers, and joysticks within the GameSir app.

There are some mobile gaming controllers that are plug-n-play. I’ve used my fair share of them and even though they all seem to have a companion app, the apps aren’t always a necessity for playing a game. In some cases, you can bypass the app altogether. That’s not the case with the GameSir — and certainly not for playing COD Mobile.

GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

In order for the phone to recognize that it is the gamepad connected to it, you need to follow the instructions below.

  1. Download and install the GameSir app from Google Play. Do not open the app yet.
  2. Insert your phone into the controller. The gamepad should automatically turn on, but if it doesn’t, press the “G + Home” buttons on the controller to turn it on.
  3. After you see the controller is on (indicated by blue LEDs on the controller), press & hold the “G + Home” buttons on the controller to put it into G-Touch mode. When the blue LED turns green, you will know the mode has changed. This is the mode you need it to be in for mapping purposes. NOTE: G-Touch functionality is not compatible with all games.
  4. Once the controller is in G-Touch mode, open the GameSir app and make sure the app recognizes the correct device. It should show “GameSir-X3 Type-C” with a little link next to it indicating it’s connected. You will likely see on-screen prompts when you install your phone into the gamepad before you even open the app.
  5. At this point, you will want to add the games you want to access with the GameSir into the GameSir app dashboard. You can search for games through the app, but you will still download them using the Google Play store. If you already have the games you want to play installed on your phone, you can press the “+” in the dashboard to add the game to your GameSir library.
  6. After you start up COD Mobile, you will need to be able to see the controls on the screen. Then it’s a matter of moving the different GameSir controls to the right areas of the touchscreen. The right joystick should be set to sliding mode and the other should be in joystick mode. Once you are done, you will want to save the configuration to the device. To make things easier, GameSir allows users to share configurations and you should be able to find a COD Mobile configuration that is already set up and being shared.
GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

GameSir does provide a written tutorial on this process but it states that it is for the GameSir X2. There are several different YouTube videos that also walk through the process, but I found this one to be the best. It was published in June 2022 so it is fairly recent and I can confirm that it does work with this controller.

After I used the shared profile from that YouTuber, I started playing normally. I never had any issues with the controller disconnecting. There were a couple of times my character locked up or had a delayed response, but for the most part, I was able to enjoy playing without the hassle of using the touchscreen controls.

The controller is very comfortable to play with and I could still reach the screen when I needed to. I thought the buttons and joysticks were responsive and registered my input movements as they should.

GAMESIR X3 Type-C Cooled Mobile Gaming Controller

The cooling fan works wonderfully. I wish there was a different option for powering it since you end up being tethered to a cable and the goal of this device is to be mobile. I noticed after playing for 20-30 minutes that the phone was getting warm. So, I plugged in a battery and let the fan cool it down. The fan creates some noise but it works really, really well. The phone started cooling down quickly after turning the fan on and aside from the extra weight, I didn’t even notice it was there after a while.

Conclusion

While I still think some improvements can be made with this controller, it’s a great product and it really does enhance the way you play games. Gamepads like this one change the mobile gaming landscape for the better.

Gamevice for iPad 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/gamevice-for-ipad-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/gamevice-for-ipad-2022-review/#respond Thu, 23 Jun 2022 17:49:00 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=110277

Gamevice controller brings console gaming to the iPad.

I have been a fan of mobile gaming since the original GameBoy and loved the loophole to the adage “why don’t you go outside and play.”  Instead of sitting inside the home and in front of a television, the system allowed portable on-the-go entertainment.  As the tech expanded, I upgraded with each generation and settled most recently with the Nintendo Switch.

Beyond Nintendo consoles, I enjoyed the PS Vita and GameGear, and as phone gaming became a reality, I moved through Nokia, Android, and ultimately iPhone/iPad gaming.  It was only a matter of time before the console wars spilled into the phone market.  Thanks to controllers like the Gamevice, you can pair an iPad with a console-style controller to enjoy a pseudo-console experience on the go.

Gamevice for iPad

The GAMEVICE for IPad arrived in a 14 1/2 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches tall by 2 9/16 inches thick retail package.  Atop the cover panel, you will find the company name, logo, and support information for iPad generations five through nine in skinny black font.  At the top right of the panel, you will find “Mobile” in Xbox green font, while the bottom corners provided XBOX-specific logos.

The main showcase was the large, slightly-raised, glossy image of a gamified iPad at the center of the panel.  The colorful iPad was edged by dual black controllers and accented with a soft grey posterior shadow.  The controllers showed dual analog thumb sticks, an analog D-pad, and YXAB buttons.  The clean white background served as a nice backdrop for the main image.

The top panel displayed the company name and logo, while the left side panel listed five product-specific features: 1. Low-Latency Direct Connection. 2. Ergonomic Handheld Design. 3. Analog Triggers and Console Level controls. 4. Cloud and Mobile Gaming Compatible. 5. 3.5mm Audio Headphone Jack.  The right side panel provided information about the included XBOX Game Pass and 1-month Ultimate membership (FOR NEW MEMBERS ONLY).

The front panel listed the product contents (GAMEVICE for IPad and user manual), product requirements (iPad OS 14 or later, iPad 5th-9th generation, lightning only connection, internet connection for Apps, Does not work with all games), information about the GAMEVICE Live App for games, trademark information, GV153 model number, product manufacturing labels, and an SKU barcode.

The rear panel provided three helpful, photo-quality images of the GAMEVICE device.  The top image displayed the left-hand controller from a lateral perspective and demonstrated the analog stick, shoulder bumpers, and ergonomic grip.  The lower left image showed a top-down view of the iPad cradle and dual controllers, while the lower right image showed the lighting connector, right analog stick, and a bottom to top view of the right controller.

The right edge of the panel provided nearly the same product features as the left side panel but also mentioned lightning pass-through charging.  The lower section recommended downloading the GAMEVICE live companion app from the App Store, reviewed the compatible iPad devices, and provided a list of the features in German, Italian, Spanish, and three character languages that I could not identify.

Gamevice for iPad

I removed the packaging lid and was greeted by a large shiny 11.2-ounce controller nestled within a white plastic cutout.  I lifted the controller out of the box and reviewed the components.  The left controller measured 2 7/8 inches wide at the top by 2 1/4 inches wide at the bottom and was 5 9/16 inches tall.

The rounded edge of the controller tapered nicely from the top end to the bottom end and extended toward the back for a comfortable grip surface. The controller measured 1 7/8 inches thick at the grip and 3/8 inches thick at the iPad connector edge. The top segment of the grip had ergonomic L1 and L2 shoulder buttons just above a cutout for the left middle finger.

The top surface of the controller provided a 1/2 inches diameter analog stick at the top left and a 3/8 inches diameter dome-shaped button with three circles.  Just below the analog stick and dome buttons, you will find a 1-inch by 1-inch d-pad and then a 3/8 inches diameter home button 1/2 inches below the d-pad.  The inner surface of the controller segment had a 3 7/16 inches tall by 1/8 inches thick rubberized backing surface and was attached to the square iPad compatible notch.

The right controller measured 2 7/8 inches wide at the top by 2 1/4 inches wide at the bottom and also measured 5 9/16 inches tall.  Like the left controller, the right-sided controller tapered from the top to the bottom and around to the back.  The device measured 1 7/8 inches thick at the grip segment and 3/8 inches thick at the iPad connector edge.

Just like the left controller, the right side had an R1/R2 shoulder button, a middle finger cutout, and a comfortable plastic hand grip.  The controller’s surface provided a 1/2 inches diameter analog stick along the right upper edge, and a 3/8 inches dome-shaped button with three horizontal lines.  Located between the aforementioned buttons, you will find four 3/8 inches diameter buttons (Y, X, B, A) arranged into a D-pad shape.

The lower/front edge of the controller had a lightning input port and a 3.5mm audio output port.  The inner surface of the iPad connector provided a lightning prong for the iPad, and a posterior 3 7/16 inches tall by 1/8 inches thick rubberized backing that connected to the other controller (8 1/2 inches wide).

Gamevice for iPad

To install the GAMEVICE device, I slid the lightning prong into the base of my daughter’s iPad 6th generation (A1893) and pulled the controllers apart.  The backing will expand from the 8 1/2 inches wide resting width to 9 1/2 inches wide to accommodate the iPad. Once the lateral pressure is reduced, the device will tension back down to the resting width.

Before you dispose of the outer packaging, make sure to remove the small cardboard accessory box resting within the plastic shell.  The box contained a small instructional manual and instructions for the posterior rubber spacers.  Apparently, the device will accommodate the iPad Air 2/3 iPad Pro 9.7/10.5 inch with the spacers adjacent to the controllers and the iPad 5th through 9th generations if the spacers were placed at the center.

The spacers served to enhance the grip with the thinner iPad and reduced the wiggle between the iPad and controller.  Once I plugged the device into the iPad, a notification appeared on the screen informing me that the device was not supported and that I needed to download the App.

I navigated to the iOS App Store, selected the 2* Gamevice Live App, and perused the preview, ratings/reviews, and the descriptive paragraph.  When I activated the App, it took me to a main GAME PASS Ultimate screen and provided a place to input my email address.  Please note that this setup only works for “NEW SUBSCRIBERS” and will not add a month to those already enrolled.

I was a bit surprised that it would not offer a free month to everyone but also understood the goal of increased subscriptions as the means to make money.  I thus selected “skip” and went to the second screen.  From the main App panel, you can select one of the seven icons along the left panel: 1. House icon=Featured. 2. Xbox icon. 3. GeForce now Icon. 4. Apple Arcade Icon. 5. Stadia Icon. 6. Apple Store Icon. 7. Support (FAQ/Terms/Contact Us).

I tapped the Xbox icon, and then tapped one of the listed games.  The App provided a video preview of the game (Jedi Fallen Order), allowed me to “Add to Favorites,” provided a written summary, and instructions on “How to Play.”  I tapped the “How to Play,” navigated to Safari, selected Xbox Cloud Gaming on Xbox.com, signed into my account, then shared the icon to my Home Screen.  I launched the Xbox Cloud Gaming App, signed in again to my account, and then enjoyed some portable Xbox fun.  I returned to the Feature option, tapped Fortnite, and found the same instructions. I downloaded Call of Duty Mobile, Minecraft, and Diablo Immortal and enjoyed the method that the Gamevice App linked to the App Store for downloads.

Gamevice for iPad

I followed the above instructions, downloaded the Cloud Gaming App, and decided to dive into some classic TMNT Shredders Revenge nostalgia and some Ninja Gaiden 2 action.  I loved the control layout, the placement of the analog sticks, the D-pad, the YXBA buttons, the shoulder buttons, and the grip of the controller.  In fact, the overall experience felt amazingly like the Nintendo Switch but with a bigger screen and a markedly more comfortable grip.

If you have used the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode, then you likely have experienced cramping and some mild discomfort in the wrists/forearms.  The rounded grip melded well with my hand and created a truly comfortable experience.  Interestingly, it felt very similar to the Meta Quest 2 handgrips.  The iPad utility was more enjoyable than expected; I liked the ability to play Xbox games and the option to rack up achievement points as well.  I used an iPad 6th generation for most of the testing but then found that I was able to use my younger daughter’s iPad Air 2.

I tested a variety of Apple Apps, including Contra Returns, Diablo Immortal, and Call of Duty Mobile.  I quickly found the Call of Duty Mobile game to be worthy of several replays and marathon sessions.  I do not have Apple Arcade, Nvidia, or Stadia accounts and did not download any games from those services.  I did utilize the Featured tab and the Xbox tab to review options for Fortnite, Dragonball Fighter Z, Terarria, and Star Wars Squadrons.

Of all of the games that I tested, TMNT: Shredders Revenge proved to be my favorite.  I easily navigated the starting level, beat the foot clan, and then faced off against Bebop with Splinter. I tried the level with Donatello, with Raphael and found Splinter to be my favorite. I compared the game on the Xbox/TV to that of the iPad Gamevice controller and felt the handheld mode to be superior.

Gamevice for iPad

Despite the positives, there were a few counterarguments to make. First, the device does not have an included carry case and does not assume a more portable position. The retention straps and spacers provided improved fit with the iPad and ensured a comfortable, fun, portable experience. However, once the iPad was removed, the Gamevice device did not shrink down further.

The two controllers, unlike the smaller switch controllers that slide onto the screen, remain permanently affixed to the backing rubber strap. If placed into a bag, you risk damage to the analog triggers and possible development of drift. Next, some may consider the ~$100 price to be a bit too steep. When you compare the cost of some of the console controllers, or to some of the modern console games, a one-time ~$100 fee for the controller is much more palatable.

Additionally, for those on the fence, the included 1-month new member GamePass deal will sweeten the pot. Furthermore, the website provides links to a one-month free Stadia, apple Arcade, and Luna.

Backbone One iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/backbone-one-mobile-gaming-controller-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/backbone-one-mobile-gaming-controller-2022-review/#respond Wed, 11 May 2022 14:41:21 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=108738&preview=true&preview_id=108738 Backbone One controller helps bridge the gap between console and mobile gaming.

When I was a teenager, my parents had a deal with my brother and me regarding our grades. We got paid for good grades on our report cards. A lot of kids have this kind of deal with their parents, but one of the cool things about this deal was that if we got straight A’s, we got a lump sum of $150. I don’t know if they didn’t expect one of us to do that, but I had my heart set on getting a Super Nintendo Entertainment System. So, I got straight A’s and they had to pay up.

Fast-forward several years and you would have found me playing Lego Star Wars in my apartment on my Xbox 360. I specifically bought that gaming system to play Lego Star Wars just like I wanted the SNES to play Super Mario World. I played it for hours on end. That Xbox 360 was my last gaming console for a while. I switched to playing mobile games like Angry Birds on my iPhone for many years.

Not too long ago, I stumbled across Lego Star Wars in the App Store. I remembered how much I loved playing it on the Xbox so I downloaded it and tried to lumber through a few levels. It was not the same gaming experience without a true controller. Fortunately for me, mobile gaming controllers, like the Backbone One for iPhone, are bridging the gap between console gaming and mobile gaming.

Backbone One iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

DETAILS

The Backbone One is a snap-on controller adapter for mobile phones (currently available for the iPhone; Android compatibility coming soon). The controller connects to the iPhone using a Lightning connector. This connection provides power to the controller (Backbone One does not have a battery) as well as gaming functionality. In addition to the Lightning connector, the Backbone One also features a passthrough Lighting port for charging the iPhone with a standard Lightning cable, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The design of the Backbone One mimics popular console controllers and the companion app connects users to services such as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Apple Arcade and even gives users the ability to stream directly from their Xbox, Playstation, or PC.

  • Collapsible and compact design
  • Low latency connection
  • Play games that support controllers
  • Capture game clips and screenshots

BACKBONE APP

The companion app for the Backbone One is called Backbone — Next Level Play. It’s available from Backbone Labs, Inc. It is not required to use the Backbone One, but it does provide an added gaming experience for users. The app allows users to play any game or service that supports game controllers. This app also works with games like Call of Duty: Mobile, Minecraft, and Genshin Impact.

Backbone One iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

In addition to access to gaming services, the Backbone app gives users the ability to record, edit, and share gaming clips. The Backbone One has a built-in capture button that allows users to screen record or capture a screenshot during gameplay thanks to the app. The app also provides users the option to create party scenarios with friends because of its built-in push notifications when friends who are also using Backbone start playing.

According to the App Store, Backbone — Next Level Play may collect user data including Purchases, Contacts, Identifiers, Diagnostics, Contact Info, User Content, and Usage Data. The app takes 210.9 MB of space and requires iOS 13.0 or later.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Backbone One comes in a clearly marked and branded box. There is an image of the device on the front of the box along with the Made for iPhone icon. The back of the box outlines some of the features of the controller and a second image of the controller is included there, too. The box is wrapped with an outer sleeve. When you slide it off and open the inner box, you’ll find the controller and the Quick Start Guide.

The Quick Start Guide is a simple three-step process to follow. It instructs users to line up the phone with the Backbone’s Lightning connector and then grab the left handle to extend it. The third step is to ‘snap’ your phone into place and start playing.

Backbone One iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

While it’s not required, I did download the app and get it set up. When the Backbone One is not connected and you start up the app, you’ll see a screen that instructs you to connect it. The app is free, but there is a Backbone Plus service that is subscription-based (around $50/year). The controller comes with a one-year free subscription. If you choose to use it, you will have to connect to Backbone’s system using your Apple ID or a Google account. There is also a feature that allows users to play on any screen if they want to use the Backbone One with cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Google Stadia. While I did not use Stadia my fiancé did use Xbox Cloud Gaming and he really enjoyed his time with it. He said it was like having my Xbox in my hands.

One of my favorite things about this controller is that is literally a plug-and-play option for mobile gaming. Most iOS games have the functionality built in to recognize connected controllers and since the Backbone One is basically a wired connection, there is no perceptible lag during gameplay.

I’ve used different types of mobile gaming controllers including the GameSir X2 Lightning Controller, the RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller for iOS, and the Razer Kishi for iPhone. So far, the Backbone One is my favorite. The RiotPWR ESL controller – and ones that are designed like it – are not really my style because it mounts the phone above the controller and just doesn’t feel natural.

Backbone One iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

The ‘snap-in’ styles like the GameSir X2, Backbone One, and the Razer Kishi provide a much more comfortable grip. The GameSir X2 has a slightly different style than the Kishi and the Backbone. It has a flat back to it and makes the iPhone + controller feel a lot like a Nintendo Switch. That’s not a negative, but it’s still not my favorite way to play mobile games.

So, that brings us to the Kishi and the Backbone One. Both of these controller options are designed most like a console controller. The Kishi’s thumbsticks are a little larger and the action buttons are a little more rounded. This makes the Kishi’s grip feel a little more like an Xbox controller. My fiancé, who is an avid COD: Mobile player, prefers the Kishi over the Backbone One because of this.

Looking at the handles on the Kishi, they are a little more squared-off than the Backbone and the Backbone’s handles actually look and feel more like an Xbox or Playstation handle to me. The action buttons feel a bit like the Nintendo Switch on the Backbone. So, for me, the Backbone One is a clear winner when it comes to how it feels when you use it. It really comes down to personal preference on what feels right to a particular person.

Backbone One iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller

As I mentioned above, my mobile game of choice is Lego Star Wars. When it came time to test how the Backbone One actually reacted during gameplay, I started it up and lost track of time really quickly. What I thought was only about 10 minutes was actually an hour. Playing mobile games with the Backbone One was effortless and just felt – natural. I was able to adapt quite easily to the controls and the only thing that felt a little out of place was the placement of the menu buttons.

The controller reacts in real-time and there is absolutely no lag whatsoever. I never had any issues with commands registering and I also had no problems with the iPhone recognizing that the controller was connected. The only thing that would make this controller better is if a travel case was included with the package. That said, there is a really nice case I recently found on Amazon that works great with the Backbone One.

CONCLUSION

If you enjoy mobile gaming, then you need a mobile gaming controller. There are several options/styles to choose from but I think the Backbone One is the best option available at this time. It’s comfortable to use – even for long gaming sessions – and it connects to the iPhone seamlessly.

The optional app and gaming system from Backbone is a great perk and I truly appreciate that it isn’t a required service to use the controller. The controller retails for around $100 (at the time of publishing) and that seems like a fair market value (the Kishi is the same price; GameSir X2 Lighting is around $70).

Given the features and easy use of this device, I think any gamer would enjoy using the Backbone One.

Kombinera Nintendo Switch Game 2022 REVIEW https://macsources.com/kombinera-nintendo-switch-game-2022-review/ https://macsources.com/kombinera-nintendo-switch-game-2022-review/#respond Tue, 12 Apr 2022 15:21:00 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=107817 Kombinera allows users to combine colored orbs to complete the amazing 300 level Puzzle-Platformer

Like other Xennials, a micro-generation term coined by Sarah Stankorb in Good Magazine in 2014, I was born into a childhood reminiscent of my parents but quickly joined the tech-centric stampede.  I knew an age before computers, the internet, and cell phones were ubiquitous but grew up alongside the generations of video game consoles.

In fact, it is rather surreal to think that the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released 39 years ago this July.  From the NES to the Super NES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii-U, several versions of GameBoy systems, Xbox, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch, gaming has been an integral part of my life.   Now, with kids of my own, one of my guilty pleasures after a long day’s work is to unwind with some time with my Nintendo Switch.

I often pick between Action/RPG-style games or Puzzlers when it comes to game genre. So when I heard about the release of Kombinera on the Nintendo Switch E-Shop on 4/7/22, I was excited about the 300-level design, the promise of old-school visuals with a new school techno beat.  The game was published by Atari and crafted by Graphite Lab In St. Louis.

Jacob Lear and Phil Snowbarger were the lead designers for Kombinera, while Brendan Chapman was the lead programmer.   The Nintendo Switch version of Kombinera (also on iOS/PC/Android/Atari VCS/Xbox One and S/X/Playstation 4/5) will cost $14.99 and require 228 MB of space. The Game Thumbnail showed a star/space background with a lower left blue ball, upper right pink ball, upper left green ball, and lower right yellow ball.  Each of the balls resembled a Training Droid from Star Wars.

Kombinera Nintendo Switch Game

Before progressing into Kombinera, you must “PRESS ANY BUTTON TO CONTINUE” to advance beyond a vivid Epilepsy Warning in bold red/white font.  The subsequent screens provided an Atari Logo, Graphite Lab logo, and Joystick logo, followed by a loading screen with a red, green, yellow, and white star.  The main panel provided the name along the top of the panel and PLAY, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, SETTINGS, and CREDITS along the bottom of the panel.

Selecting “ACCOMPLISHMENTS” will allow you to evaluate the stars (trophies) earned for completing levels and tasks in Kombinera.  Some of the tasks remain as “????” until you discover the needed activity.  The right side panel displayed the time played, levels completed, goal times, total combinations, total deaths, total jumps, bullets blocked, and the number of walls broken.  Selecting “B” allowed me to return to the main page.

Selecting “SETTINGS” will allow you to adjust Music, SFX, Screen Shake (on/off), bloom (on/off), Cutscenes (on/off), Color Scheme Standard/protanopia/deuteranopia, Language, and Controls (Jump, Small Jump, move left/right, restart level).  Lastly, selecting credits will allow you to see the upward scrolling game credits on Kombinera.

Selecting “Play” from the main screen will take you to the first level “Long Division.”  The opening space/star background was a perfect backdrop for the large blue, red, green, and yellow orbs.  The following screen presented a psychedelic, kaleidoscope-like entry screen similar to an entryway of a carnival.  The first level demonstrated the win scenario by teaching you how to move the white balls together.

As you move the left thumbstick in Kombinera, each ball will move in the same direction.  You need to use the terrain to move the balls into proximity to one another.  The second level introduced the small jump “A” button, while the third level introduced the large jump “B” button.  The fourth level introduced the first major obstacle for the game.  You will notice colored spikes and a similarly colored ball.  If you adjusted the visual settings from the “SETTINGS” screen, you may have different colored orbs than those listed here.

If the wrong colored ball touches the spikes, a dead-skull icon will appear at the site of the demise.  The fifth level introduced a series of big jumps, while the sixth level began to incorporate jumps and color coordination.  Without giving any spoilers, you will need to combine jumps and movement through spikes to connect the orbs.  The seventh and eighth levels introduced a series of jumps to get to the end.  Each level built upon themes of the preceding level and required you to add additional levels of control/thought.

Kombinera Nintendo Switch Game

Following level 20 in Kombinera, you will get a small cut scene and then the game will introduce a new puzzle concept of breakable walls.  In standard mode, the yellow ball will break any yellow wall it contacts, while the red ball can contact the spikes.  In protanopia/deuteranopia modes, the ball colors will be white/teal.  Similar to Super Mario, you can jump on the tiles as they fall away if needed.  Level 27 introduced the first green lasers of the game and required only a green ball to touch them.

As you combine the ball colors, they gain the properties of each of the colors.  As an example, combining a green/white ball will allow you to contact lasers.  As another example, combining a yellow and red ball will allow you to touch spikes and break down walls. As you play through the levels, you will notice small crowns hidden throughout some of the levels.  The crowns represented bonuses for those individual levels, while each of the levels had a counter along the top left of the screen.

As you beat the time limit of each of the levels in Kombinera, you can earn a flag.  As you collect the special crowns (not in each level), you will earn a yellow crown and will unlock special levels later in the game.  Despite the presence of the crowns, the overall goal was to complete each level in a set period of time.

I was impressed with the progression of Kombinera and with the control scheme.  As a puzzler, the game started out easy but then escalated the difficulty.  After about an hour and a half of playtime, I had reached level 60, collected the flags (time) for nearly every level, and all crowns except for level 35.  I was able to beat the 8.00 second goal time of level 35 but could not get the crown despite 39 attempts/deaths.

I loved that you could play each level as many times as desired without worrying about a set number of lives.  If you were behind on time or perhaps you were stuck, you could press the right trigger to reset the level.  Unfortunately, the game did not provide the ability to navigate back if you accidentally connected all of the balls.  To return to previous levels, you must press the “+” to quit.  This will allow you to return to the level select screen.  Even though I was glad that this feature was included, I would have liked the ability to repeat levels from within the game after beating the chapter.

Of the first 60 levels, level 38 was my favorite because it combined elements of lasers and spikes.  Level 56 introduced yellow/red/green combinations and required specialized timing for the lasers. Chapter 3 introduced a neon blue ball with alternating descending “water” columns.  The white ball can touch the side of the column but cannot be squished by it.  Level 48 introduced a new feature whereby you had to deal with inverse ball movements.

In addition to the side-scrolling/gravity feature of previous levels, you had to contend with connecting balls that dropped from the ceiling and had to merge with balls on the floor.  This feature was rather neat and made me think about a larger dimensional space.  As the orbs connected, the result could drop to either the top or bottom of the level depending on how the puzzle was designed.

Kombinera Nintendo Switch Game

Kombinera screamed classic Atari and did a good job at combining puzzle features with catchy music.  I was a little disappointed in the limited story, but I have only played through the first three chapters. As you discover crowns, you will unlock special levels with extreme precision requirements.

I was able to complete secret level 5 but was not able to complete levels 1-4. Thanks to the 300 level design, hidden crowns, and time feature, the game will provide hours of replay value.  At a price of under fifteen dollars, the game offers plenty to do.  If you are not a fan of puzzle-like games, this may not be the game for you.  However, if you are a fan of moving and physics puzzles, this game may be the perfect way to spend your time.  This game will require trial and error tactics for many of the levels and you will want to continue to work toward completing the time/crown challenges.

Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller REVIEW Provides a Long Battery Life and Ergonomic Support for Gamers https://macsources.com/sonicon-wireless-ps4-elite-controller-review/ https://macsources.com/sonicon-wireless-ps4-elite-controller-review/#respond Mon, 07 Mar 2022 16:07:50 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=97613&preview=true&preview_id=97613

Despite advanced features, controller doesn’t live up to expectations.

My son, like most teenage boys, loves to play video games. His favorite gaming system is the PlayStation and he plays all types of games on it. I’m not a gamer per se so I asked his opinion of the Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller that came across my desk for review.

DETAILS

The Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller is a third-party gaming controller that is compatible with the PlayStation 4. It’s modded and includes removable back paddles. It does work out of the box (default configuration is mapped to the four face buttons) but is remappable. The controller is designed to be ergonomically correct with an enlarged grip and non-slip textures.

Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller

According to the product description, the controller is supposed to outperform the stock PS4 controllers. the battery that is built-in is 1000 mAh and can last up to 8 hours. It’s rechargeable with a USB-C cable (included). The firmware of the controller is upgradeable via the USB-C port.

Compatible with:

  • PS4/PS4 Slim/PS4 Pro
  • Windows 7/8/10
  • Switch (Bluetooth adapter required)
  • Mac OS
  • iOS
  • Raspberry Pi Emulators/Retropie/Lakka/EmulationStation/Batocera/RecalBox/RetroArch/EmuELEC
Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller

What’s included:

  • 1 x Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller
  • 1 x USB-Type C Charging & Pairing Cable
  • 1 x User Manual

USER EXPERIENCE

The controller comes in a simple retail box. There is an image of the controller on the front of the box and the product name was stamped on the side. There were no other details on the box. This product does appear to only be sold online through Amazon so the plain box isn’t a deal-breaker.

Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller

As far as gameplay goes, my son felt the controller was unresponsive at times and that the buttons got in the way. He said that the replaced PlayStation button (the lightning bolt) did not work until fully pressed down and by that time, the PlayStation menu was displayed. That made it much more difficult to switch between games.

The paddles on the back felt quite wobbly and they were also hard to press. My son noted that at first, you hear/feel a click when a paddle was pressed but there was no action as a result. And, even though the controller is supposed to be a little larger than standard PS4 controllers and ergonomically comfortable, my son reported that the buttons were hurting his fingers due to his lengthy fingers. He also mentioned that since the controller is larger that people with smaller hands might have issues with it.

Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller 004

My son also noted that one of the games listed for use with this controller is Dark Souls, but that game has a lock-on button, which would make the right thumbstick irrelevant.

CONCLUSION

Despite the difficulties he had using the controller, he did like the way the controller felt overall and felt that he had a better grip while playing. Unfortunately, that is the only thing he liked about the controller. He really wasn’t a fan of the back paddles and thought it would be better and easier to use without them.

Sonicon Wireless PS4 Elite Controller 007

Even though part of the allure of this controller is the addition of the back paddles, my son didn’t feel that it was worth the additional money (approximately $40) on top of the price of the PS4 controller to get those back paddles.

RiotPWR ESL iOS Gaming Controller REVIEW https://macsources.com/riotpwr-esl-ios-gaming-controller-review/ https://macsources.com/riotpwr-esl-ios-gaming-controller-review/#comments Wed, 26 Jan 2022 21:16:21 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=94478&preview=true&preview_id=94478

Create an enjoyable gaming experience with your mobile device with this gaming controller.

Gaming has come a long way from where it was in the 80s. We used to have to visit video arcades to play anything advanced in nature and at home, we had consoles that were only capable of 8-bit graphics. I’ve seen video games evolve through those primitive platforms into modern video games that can be played on our mobile devices, advanced consoles, computers, and even in virtual reality. For me, I tend to play on my iPhone these days. I don’t have tons of free time these days and my phone affords me the option to play some games in between tasks.

RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller

One of my favorite games is LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. I originally played that game on my Xbox 360 more than 10 years ago. Now the entire game has been redeveloped for mobile gaming. I was very excited to find it was available so I downloaded it. I started trying to play and found that it just wasn’t as enjoyable without a controller. Fortunately, I just acquired the RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller for iOS.

DETAILS

The RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller allows users to play mobile games as they would on a console. The design of the controller mimics modern console controllers. It features a solid comfortable grip, two joysticks, a D-pad, and X-Y-A-B/select/start buttons. The controller operates with plug-and-play functionality and uses a wired Lightning connection to connect to your mobile device. The controller provides passthrough charging to the connected mobile device – assuming the controller is connected to power through the charging port. There is a companion app that provides controller-compatible iOS games and apps – Ludo Mapp. A headphone socket is also included on the controller.

IN THE BOX

  • RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller with the connected Lightning cable
  • iPhone mount
  • QR code card that points to the Ludo Mapp app or the user manual

USER EXPERIENCE

The box for the controller has a clean, easy-to-read design. There is a colorful image of the controller on the front along with the name of the product. The back of the box provides some basic details and the side has the following information included in multiple languages: “iPhone not included. Does not work with all games, requires iOS 7 or later. Lightning connection. Lightning receptacle.” There is a badge on the back of the box that indicates there is a limited lifetime warranty on the controller. Inside the box, there is a card that describes what the warranty covers (mainly workmanship defects). There is no printed user manual included, but it can be downloaded by using the QR Code provided in the box.

RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller

The controller is essentially bus-powered. It powers on automatically when you plug the Lightning cable into your mobile device and it powers off when you disconnect it. Your connected mobile device can receive passthrough charging provided a power source is connected to the controller’s Lightning port (located on the bottom of the unit). Getting the controller set up is incredibly easy. Once it’s plugged into your mobile device, you just start up a game and start playing. It doesn’t work with all games that are available on iOS, but it does work with a lot of them. The companion app is really just a catalog of games that are compatible with the controller. I tested out the controller with LEGO Star Wars as I already had it downloaded on my phone. It worked perfectly. I didn’t have to download the Ludu Mapp first. Truth be told, I only meant to play a couple of rounds to test out how well the controller worked and I ended up playing for over an hour. The gameplay was seamless and I didn’t have any issues with connections.

I am using an iPhone 12 Pro and my fiancé has an iPhone 13 Pro. He said the controller gave him the ability to have gun control, which he was lacking without the controller.

CONCLUSION

The RiotPWR ESL Gaming Controller is a great accessory for any avid mobile user. It gives you an entirely new set of activities to enjoy on your mobile device. It’s a fairly budget-friendly accessory and it’s really fun to use. If you are a mobile gamer or want to be able to enjoy your games a little more, check out the RiotPWR ESL controller.

Scuf Instinct Pro Wireless Controller REVIEW https://macsources.com/scuf-instinct-pro-wireless-controller-review/ https://macsources.com/scuf-instinct-pro-wireless-controller-review/#respond Fri, 31 Dec 2021 16:52:58 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=93840&preview=true&preview_id=93840

An innovative, advanced controller that helps users to play better and faster.

Last year I updated my gaming system to the Xbox Series X and decided that my controller needed an upgrade, too. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of options for pro-level controllers that are wireless for the Series X console. Earlier this year, Scuf Gaming released the Instinct Pro wireless controller for the Xbox and I thought it would be the perfect addition to my new gaming system.

DETAILS

The Instinct Pro was designed to be a high-performance gaming controller for the Xbox. It is, in fact, the first wireless performance controller designed for the Xbox Series X|S. It was released in mid-2021 and it incorporates features such as a paddle control system. The controller body is shaped like the standard Xbox controllers, but it has a refined ergonomic shape for better control. The controller has interchangeable faceplates, thumbsticks, and D-pads.

Additionally, the Instinct Pro has adjustable Instant Triggers and a high-performance grip. All the buttons and triggers are remappable and users can even save profiles for different games.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Scuf Instinct Pro comes in a very secure, very well-branded retail box. The outside of the box has imagery of the controller and its features. When you take the outer sleeve off the box, you can open the flap to reveal the controller inside. When I opened the box, I revealed a green version of the Instinct Pro. There was a piece of foam around the two joysticks and the D-pad to help protect them.

When I lifted out the controller, I found the user manual and the accessories beneath it. The accessories that come with the controller are a pair of AA batteries, a USB-C cable, and a replacement set of joysticks. There is also a Scuf Instinct model controller and the main differences between the two models is that the Pro version has instant triggers and a high-performance grip. In addition to the Instinct Pro, I also have the Steel Gray interchangeable faceplate which comes with a replacement D-pad, too.

The controller has a really nice feel to it. The weight is comparable to the standard Xbox controller, but it does feel more balanced and the performance grip is definitely noticeable. One of the first things I did was to swap out the faceplate and the joysticks. Removing the faceplate was incredibly easy.

It just pops off the top of the controller and then the joysticks pull off their posts. I installed the joysticks with some caution because I didn’t want to damage the posts or the joysticks. Since the posts move around, it can be hard to get the joystick in place just right. Once I got the joysticks replaced, I snapped the new faceplate on. The entire process only took about 2 minutes.

Scuf Instinct Pro Wireless Controller

As far as gameplay goes, I played two games for initial testing of the controller – Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty Black Ops 4. The pairing process of the controller was very simple. Once you place the batteries in their compartment, you plug the controller into the gaming system using the provided USB-C cable. This pairs the controller to the system.

Once the pairing is done, you can unplug the controller from the system and play wirelessly. Since RDR2 is one of my favorite games, I played for several minutes just to get a feel for the controller and out it functions. The controller has a great response time and just feels great in the hands. I moved on to COD next and got a great chance to try out the triggers.

Scuf Instinct Pro Wireless Controller

Before the Scuf controller, I used an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller by Microsoft. That was a step up from the standard controller and great for first-person shooter games. It also has programmable paddles that are interchangeable. The issue I had with that controller is that the paddles would pop off easily if the controller was not handled properly.

That and since I used it so much, the edges of the handles started falling apart. When I migrated over to the Xbox Series X, I wanted to update my controller to the Instinct Pro so that I had the same type of features for combat games. The Instinct Pro is exactly what I was looking for. The triggers make it easy to get quick shots off and compete against advanced players.

CONCLUSION

The Scuf Instinct Pro Controller is a great upgrade from the standard controllers that come with the Xbox. I was able to use this controller with both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox One. It worked great with both of them and I feel like if you are trying to up your gaming performance, this is the way to go. The Instinct controller starts at $169.99 and the Instinct Pro starts at $199.99. Both models have multiple options for customization.

Dark Matter Hyper-K Ultralight Optical Gaming Mouse REVIEW https://macsources.com/dark-matter-hyper-k-ultralight-optical-gaming-mouse-review/ https://macsources.com/dark-matter-hyper-k-ultralight-optical-gaming-mouse-review/#respond Fri, 29 Oct 2021 16:21:38 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=92883&preview=true&preview_id=92883

A super lightweight mouse that is a great option for any gaming fans.

Finding a gaming mouse can be a tricky business – especially when you are running a macOS machine. The Dark Matter Hyper-K Ultralight Optical Gaming Mouse from Monoprice is designed to provide industry-leading precision, durability, and construction within a full-size mouse. So, I thought I would give it a try. It features a honeycomb structure to ensure it’s as lightweight as it can be. It has an attached premium paracord-wrapped cable jacket, high-grade PTFE feet, customizable DPI, industry-leading Omron switches, and a 16,000 DPI PixArt Optical sensor, which is the most respected producer of optical sensors. The Omron switches are rated for more than 20 million clicks.

USER DETAILS

The mouse is packaged in a black box with an image of the mouse on the cover. The back of it has another image of the mouse and a small expository paragraph about the product. The box also has a magnetic cover that opens so you can see the product inside. When you pull the mouse out of the box, you will find it concealed by plastic. There is a small piece of paper that directs the user to go to the website if they need more information on the product and provides some information about the mouse and its parts.

The mouse is incredibly lightweight – even with the cable. The cable has a USB-A end to it and it’s covered with paracord. While I do like the wrapped cable, it seems very light. The fabric feels as though it could snag if it were caught on something. I don’t know that it will, but it feels somewhat fragile. That is one of those things that only time will tell. As far as feel goes, the shape of the mouse is very comfortable to hold. It’s got a good curve to it and it feels smooth. I like that it has a lot of cutouts on it not just because you can see the RBG lights, but also because it seems to help dissipate heat from your hand a bit.

Monoprice Dark Matter Gaming Mouse

The mouse as it stands works very well. It’s responsive and easy to move around on a desk. The only downside is its customizability is limited to Windows users only. Monoprice has a Control Software package on their website that users can download, but when it opens, it’s an exe file, which is only useable by Windows users. That was disappointing to me as a macOS user, but not totally unexpected. Fortunately, the mouse isn’t so advanced that I can’t still use its standard features. I do wish that the side buttons could at least swap desktops. While used on my gaming machine the mouse is extremely well made for fast paced shooters.

CONCLUSION

The Dark Matter Hyper-K Ultralight Optical Gaming Mouse is a solid mouse that has a lot of features going for it. Even though I could use the customizable features, I am still really happy with its performance.

IOGEAR SYMMETRE II Pro FPS Gaming Mouse and SURFAS II Gaming Mouse Mat REVIEW https://macsources.com/iogear-symmetre-ii-pro-fps-gaming-mouse-and-surfas-ii-gaming-mouse-mat-review/ https://macsources.com/iogear-symmetre-ii-pro-fps-gaming-mouse-and-surfas-ii-gaming-mouse-mat-review/#comments Thu, 21 Oct 2021 15:57:19 +0000 https://macsources.com/?p=92636&preview=true&preview_id=92636 Find the right gear for your gaming needs thanks to IOGEAR and Kaliber Gaming.

Looking for new gaming equipment can sometimes be like finding a needle in a haystack. There are hundreds of brands out there and you don’t want to second guess a purchase. IOGEAR has some pretty remarkable products specifically made for gamers under their Kaliber Gaming moniker. The equipment features high-quality components and materials that are specifically designed for gamers and their special needs. I’ve been fortunate enough to test out two of their gaming products –  the SYMMETRE II Pro FPS Gaming Mouse and the SURFAS II Gaming Mouse Mat.

IOGEAR Kaliber Gaming Mouse and Mouse Mat

SYMMETRE II Pro FPS Gaming Mouse

The SYMMETRE II Pro FPS Gaming Mouse is designed for gamers “looking for a perfect mouse experience.” It’s designed specifically for players of first-person shooter games like Call of Duty as well as third-person shooter games like Fortnite. You can add or subtract up to 20.3 grams to your mouse to fit your gaming style. It also includes RGB backlighting. In addition to the already named features, the SYMMETRE II Pro also has customizable profiles for work or play. IOGEAR Kaliber Gaming Mouse and Mouse Mat

The SYMMETRE II Pro comes in a black and green box with the Kaliber Gaming branding included on it. The box features an image of the mouse on the cover and some of the details on it as well. The cover of the box opens up to reveal the device inside. I like that you can see the device inside the package before you buy it. The mouse is wired, which makes it a little less appealing to me, but it is very functional. I’ve been very impressed with how easy it is to use. I am currently running a MacBook Pro as my main computer but jump back and forth between my gaming PC. This actually ended up limiting my usage of the mouse a bit because the custom programming options are only available for PC users. IOGEAR has a specific software package you can download (iogear.com/Product/GME640) from their website, but the quick start guide that is included with the mouse states that it is “PC Only.” While I wasn’t surprised by this fact, I was a little disappointed that it doesn’t work with Mac. As for as it working on my PC it worked great with no complaints.

IOGEAR Kaliber Gaming Mouse and Mouse Mat

Still, the basic functions of the mouse were available to me on my mac. Out of the box, the mouse is lightweight and very easy to glide around a desktop. I love the RGB colors on the mouse. They are centered around the back of the mouse and around the click wheel so that they are visible to the user. This was something I really appreciated because I like brightly colored lights with my computer set-ups and RGB mouses sometimes focus the lighting effects elsewhere on the device. I do like the placement of the side buttons. They are easy to reach with natural hand placement on the mouse. The click wheel is very responsive and I didn’t have to do any kind of speed adjustments in my system settings to be able to use the mouse to my liking. I do wish I had the opportunity to use the side buttons for hotkeys on my MBP, but other than that, it’s a really nice piece of hardware.

SURFAS II Gaming Mouse Mat

A nice complement to the SYMMETRE II Pro is the SURFAS II Pro Gaming Mouse Mat. I remember when mousepads were a dime a dozen. People had to use them in order to get the best response from their mouse. If you have a glass top or reflective desk you still have to use one, but if you don’t, a mousepad sometimes just becomes decoration. I’ve been using XL extended mousepads to protect the top of my desk for quite some time now and I was intrigued by the SURFAS II Pro mouse mat because it is much closer to a standard size mouse pad. I just haven’t seen one in a long time.

IOGEAR Kaliber Gaming Mouse and Mouse Mat

The SURFAS II Pro Gaming Mouse Mat is designed for tournament-level performance with either laser or optical sensor mice. It’s textured with polycarbonate for accuracy and control. It has a finely grained finish and is incredibly strong and durable. The material is both waterproof and abrasion-resistant. It also shows minimal wear and tears. The base is a non-slip silicone, which keeps the mat from sliding around. It’s less than 1mm thick so it’s perfect for travel and tournament use. The mat measures 15.75” x 11.8”.

FEATURES

  • Textured polycarbonate surface for increased accuracy and control
  • Ultra-long life surface outlasts cloth mouse pads
  • Great for both optical and laser sensors
  • Non-slip silicone base keeps pad in place
  • Incredibly thin design is less than one millimeter thick!
  • Rolls up for easy travel and tournament use
  • Size: 400mm x 300mm
IOGEAR Kaliber Gaming Mouse and Mouse Mat

The SURFAS II Pro Gaming Mouse Mat is also part of the Kaliber Gaming collection and its retail packaging matches the packaging of the SYMMETRE II Pro mouse. The mat is rolled up tightly inside the box and it takes a while for it to unroll and flatten out. When I first started using it, I unrolled it and placed my keyboard on one corner and my phone on another to help it flatten out. I will say that it does seem to make the SYMMETRE II Pro mouse more responsive than using it on a desktop alone. It is a bit larger than a standard mouse pad but not as large as the XL ones I’m used to using. I love the feel of it and the fact that it’s so thin. It’s almost like you aren’t using a mouse pad at all. I didn’t find myself having any issues with running off of the mat or my wrist being rubbed by the edge of the mat. It’s comfortable to use and great. accessory for the SYMMETRE II Pro mouse.

IOGEAR Kaliber Gaming Mouse and Mouse Mat

CONCLUSION

The SURFAS II Pro Gaming Mouse Mat and the SYMMETRE II Pro FPS Gaming Mouse are both high-quality pro-level gaming accessories that I think IOGEAR has done a great job with. The mouse retails for around $50 and the mouse mat retails for around $20 (at the time of publishing). I think both prices are in line with other products that are similar and both products are worth the investment.
