Have an exquisite night’s sleep with premium bedding.
In 2018, I was introduced to the amazing Sleep Number 360 I10 smart bed at CES. I had the opportunity to try it out at the convention and when I fell in love with it, I ordered the bed after the show was over. So for the past 3 years, we’ve been enjoying sleep on a Sleep Number 360 I10 with the FlexFit 1 base (my fiance, Robyn, and I). We’ve noticed in that time that we do sleep more soundly and have fewer aches and pains than we did with a standard bed. My fiance sleeps with her head elevated most nights while I enjoy a 100% flat base. the only thing that we’ve struggled with is our sleeping temperature. No matter what the climate is in our bedroom, I can never seem to be the right temperature for a comfortable night’s sleep. After having thing problem for a few years, I discovered that Sleep Number has a solution with their True Temp bedding.
In addition to the bedding, we also upgraded our base to the FlexFit 2 base. We did this because both my fiance and I have been experiencing lower back pain caused by our sciatica nerves. So, we decided to give the FlexFit 2 a shot in the hopes that the foot adjustments might help with that.
DETAILS
The True Temp bedding by Sleep Number is designed to help consumers sleep at “their ideal temperature” for up to 6 hours. There are three different types of True Temp bedding (sheet set, blanket, and mattress layer) and when they are combined, users can get the maximum benefit of the bedding. According to Sleep Number’s website True Temp bedding, which is exclusive to Sleep Number, features “37.5® technology, made from volcanic sand particles that are activated by infrared light given off by your body when you sleep.” The True Temp bedding is supposed to move heat and moisture away from the human body when it is hot and when it is cool, the bedding helps to keep the body warm. This helps a person have a more restful sleep. There is a lot of research that Sleep Number has studied in order to make this specific bedding help consumers get better sleep.
We were fortunate to be able to try out the entire True Temp collection including a pillow, which is not listed as part of the 6-hour bedding needs. All the pieces we had the opportunity to try out are listed below along with their specs.
TRUE TEMP MATTRESS LAYER: The mattress layer is designed to lay on top of your mattress with a fitted sheet covering it. The layer has corner anchor bands that hold it in place on top of the mattress. The layer has a silky smooth feel and it conforms to the user to help provide soothing sleep. The top of the layer is made from polyethylene/ 37.5 polyester/polyester, the filling is polyester/37.5 polyester, and the back/trim is 100% polyester. The Mattress Layer is only available in one color – white.
TRUE TEMP SHEET SET: The sheet set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. The set features ExactFit which ensures that the sheets move with the user, but retains its shape for a smooth fit. The fitted sheet fits over the Mattress Layer and then the flat sheet goes on top of that. Of course, the users are meant to lay between the flat and fitted sheets. The sheets are a blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex. They are 300-thread count with a sateen weave. There are six different colors available: slate, pacific blue, dune, aqua, white, and espresso.
TRUE TEMP BLANKET: The blanker is hypoallergenic for sensitive sleepers and made with cotton and polyester. The cover has a 300-thread count and its filling is made from 60% polyester and 40% 37.5 polyester technology. The piping is satin. There are five different colors available: dark blue, gray, white, dune, and espresso.
TRUE TEMP PILLOW: There are three different shapes of the True Temp Pillow – classic, contour, and ultimate. I selected the contour version, which is designed for side or back sleepers. Like the other pieces of the True Temp collection, the pillow features 37.5 temperature balancing technology. The pillow has a cool-to-the-touch cover along with a soft fiberfill. It is hypoallergenic for sensitive sleepers. The cover is made with polyethylene, 37.5 polyester, polyester, and it’s also filled with polyester and 37.5 polyester. The filling is 100% foam.
As I mentioned above, we originally got our bed with the FlexFit 1 base. This base allows users to raise and lower the head section of the mattress only. The FlexFit 2 affords users the option to also raise and lower the feet section. Both bases provide the Partner Snore feature, Lighting, and the Head Adjustment options. The FlexFit 2 also features the ability to adjust the feet, which means users can experience the Zero Gravity adjustment.
USER EXPERIENCE
The installation of the bedding was easy. Sleep Number provides a feature called Logic Labels that helps to guide users to the easiest way to install the bedding. We have a king-size bed with a split top. We have the split top so that we can individually adjust the head of our mattress according to our individual needs. Because of that split top, the fitted sheet is a little harder to install than one standard mattress, but it’s not impossible. The Mattress Layer and the fitted sheet both have corner anchors, which I’m grateful for because it ensures that the edges don’t slip up. Aside from needing to adjust them slightly at night, we haven’t had issues with the ends of the sheet or Mattress Layer popping off the mattress. The sheets are elegant and soft and the blanket is exquisite. It really feels like we are staying in a luxury hotel when we crawl into bed at night.
Our bedding arrived in late May and so we’ve been sleeping on it now for more than 30 days. Since we’ve had the Sleep Number bed for a few years now, we have a lot of data to look at to determine whether or not there is a difference in the quality of our sleep. When we look at the past three months of data, there is a moderate increase in my sleep score between June and July, but there is a decrease between May and June. May, June, and July all have a higher score than other months in 2021. My fiancé’s data has a completely different story. The months of May and June have a remarkably higher score than the other months of the year. So, it definitely looks like the bedding has made a difference for her. Personally, I really like the pillow. I’ve had trouble with pillows over the years, but have found the contour version of the True Temp pillow to be very comforting while I sleep. I will find myself swapping pillows out frequently, but haven’t had to switch pillows since I’ve been using the True Temp pillow.
In addition to the bedding, we’ve also found that the FlexFit 2 base has made a difference in our sleeping experience. The first night we had the new base, Robyn’s sleep score was 21 points higher than her typical average score. The screenshots below show her sleep score the night before the new base was installed and the two nights after it was installed. She only had two instances of restlessness throughout that night and we believe it was because we used the Zero Gravity setting on the base. This setting is designed to make the user feel almost weightless so that it takes the pressure off of different parts of the body. It’s supposed to be very good for people who have back pain since the position keeps the spine neutral. She told me it was probably the best night’s sleep she’s had in a long time. The only issue she ended up having was shifting her position from sleeping on her back to her side. After several hours, in the zero-G position, she felt a bit stiff, as did I, so we ended up flattening the base. We have slept in zero-G when our backs are particularly stiff or painful, but since the FlexFit 2 Base only moves the feet as one section for both sleepers, we don’t sleep that way every night.
One other thing I want to comment on is the installation process of the Sleep Number bed. Since this is now our second experience with Sleep Number, I want to promote the service they provide. When you order a Sleep Number bed, you don’t have to worry about the set-up because the company sends out people to do it for you. This is a very pain-free experience. When your bed is ready to be delivered, Sleep Number will call you and set up an appointment for installation. You need to make sure that your personal belongings are removed from the bed area, but they take care of the rest. In our case, they were just removing the old base (we still have it, but it’s being stored) and replacing it with the new one. They lifted the mattress off the old base, pulled out the sections from our bed frame, and slid the new base sections in. Once the pump was connected, they laid the mattress back down and reconnected the bed to the app. The app automatically recognized that the base was the updated model and the app was ready to control both the head and feet of the base.
CONCLUSION
Our experience with Sleep Number – both the company and the product – has been stellar. We’ve had very few problems with the product, but when we have, the customer service has been impeccable and our problems have been solved. My fiance and I sleep better now than we ever have and we’ve been through several different types of mattresses during our time together. The True Temp bedding has been a great addition to our Sleep Number bed and we can’t really imagine sleeping without it now. Even though the investment costs associated with the Sleep Number products are on the high side, we think it’s worth it and would recommend the company and its products to anyone. Thanks to Sleep Number I’ve had the best sleep in my life.
