ChatGPT is a useful writing tool, but it’s not a human replacement.
As a content creator, I have been aware of AI Writing tools for quite some time, but I don’t use them in my reviews. I have tested them out and found that while they are good, they aren’t perfect. More importantly, they don’t always sound like a human. In fact, when it comes to being creative or offering an opinion, AI tools tend to fall very short.
There are many AI writing tools available to the public, but the most popular one right now — the one getting the most buzz — is ChatGPT. I was curious about how it worked so I decided to dive right into the system and provide an overview of my experience. For the remainder of this article, I will include some snippets from the ChatGPT responses, but they will always be in quotes or otherwise called out.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research organization founded in 2015. The platform is an AI-driven chatbot that was launched as a prototype in November 2022 with its stable release on February 13, 2023. GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer which is a language model that is designed to provide human-like text. ChatGPT is well-known for being versatile and being able to generate different types of content such as:
- composing music, teleplays, fairy tales, and student essays
- writing and debugging computer programs
- and, answering test questions
As good of a tool as it is, ChatGPT does still have some limitations. It has limited knowledge of events that occurred after 2021 and the program is designed to not provide political opinions. The platform also falls prey to algorithmic bias.
How does ChatGPT work?
The first step in the process is to visit https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt. This page of OpenAI’s website describes the platform and its history and provides users with different options to use the system. There is an option underneath the “Introducing ChatGPT” headline that says Try ChatGPT.
When you click on this option, you will be taken to a window that checks your browser. Then the system will ask you to log in or sign up. If you need to create an account, you can provide an email address, and continue with Google or a Microsoft Account. You must verify the email address and provide a phone number for security purposes.
Once you have created your account, you can start using the ChatGPT system through your browser. The browser-based platform is free to use, but some companies may charge for access to my API or to integrate the services into other products.
Is ChatGPT free to use?
“As an AI language model, I am not owned or operated by any individual or company, and my use is generally free for the public. However, some companies may charge for access to my API or integrate my services into their own products or services. Additionally, some applications or websites that utilize my services may charge for their own services or offer paid subscriptions for additional features or access. Overall, the availability and cost of using ChatGPT depend on how it is being used and the policies of the organization providing the access.”
Using ChatGPT to Create Content
I was interested in what ChatGPT could do so I started asking it questions about the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony. The questions I asked are in italics and ChatGPT’s responses are in quotes.
Who are the best picture nominees this year?
“As a language model, my knowledge cutoff is September 2021, and I don’t have access to current events or nominations beyond that date. Therefore, I cannot provide you with the current year’s Best Picture nominees. However, you can check the official website of the Academy Awards or entertainment news sources for updates on this year’s nominees.”
What are the qualifications for best picture for the Academy Awards?
“To qualify for the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards, a film must meet several eligibility requirements. The eligibility criteria for Best Picture are as follows:
- The film must be feature-length, defined as a runtime of more than 40 minutes.
- The film must have been publicly exhibited for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a minimum of seven consecutive days, starting from the first day of the exhibition.
- The film must be screened for Academy members in a theatrical setting in Los Angeles County.
- The film must be produced with a frame rate of at least 24 frames per second.
- The film must be recorded in either 35mm or a digital format of at least 2048×1080 pixels.
- The film must be in English or have English subtitles.
- The film must have been released in the previous calendar year, from January 1 to December 31.
Once a film meets these eligibility requirements, it can be submitted for consideration by the Academy’s voting members. The members then vote to narrow down the list of eligible films to a set of nominees, and from those nominees, the final winner of the Best Picture award is selected.”
How many best picture winners have also won best director?
“In the history of the Academy Awards, there have been 72 instances where the Best Picture winner has also won the Best Director award. This means that the film’s director is recognized for their exceptional work in directing the film, and the film itself is recognized as the best overall film of the year. However, it is worth noting that there have also been several instances where the Best Picture and Best Director awards have gone to different films. This can happen when the Academy members feel that one film was the best overall, but another film had exceptional direction. The most recent example of this was at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021, where Chloe Zhao won Best Director for “Nomadland,” while “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Nomadland” were both nominated for and won other awards.”
How many best picture nominees have there been?
“Since the inception of the Academy Awards in 1929, there have been a total of 563 films nominated for the Best Picture award. The number of nominees per year has varied throughout the history of the awards, but since 2009, the Academy has allowed up to 10 films to be nominated for Best Picture. Before 2009, the number of nominees ranged from 3 to 10 per year, with the most common number being 5. The number of nominees was expanded to up to 10 to allow for a greater diversity of films to be recognized and to reflect the evolving landscape of the film industry. The actual number of nominees in a given year is determined by a preferential voting system in which each Academy member ranks the films in order of preference, and the films with the most votes are nominated.”
Since some AI writers tend to repeat themselves, I decided to ask the same question twice, but in slightly different ways.
Write an overview about the 2023 best picture nominees.
“As a language model, I don’t have access to future events or nominations. However, I can provide a general overview of what typically goes into selecting the Best Picture nominees at the Academy Awards.
The Best Picture category is considered the most prestigious award at the Academy Awards, and each year, a select group of films are nominated for this honor. The selection process involves several steps, including initial screenings by members of the Academy, followed by further rounds of voting to narrow down the field.
Typically, the films that are nominated for Best Picture are those that are considered to be the best in terms of their overall quality, including factors such as acting, direction, cinematography, and storytelling. They are often films that have received critical acclaim and have made a significant impact on audiences.
In recent years, there has been a push for greater diversity and inclusion in the films that are nominated for Best Picture. This has resulted in a greater variety of films being considered for the award, including those that focus on underrepresented communities and issues.
It is difficult to predict which films will be nominated for Best Picture in 2023, as it depends on the quality of films released during the year and the preferences of the members of the Academy. However, it is likely that the nominees will be films that have made a significant impact on audiences and have received critical acclaim.”
Since I thought the use of the year threw the system off, I posed the same question, in a different way.
Write an overview about the best picture nominees.
“As a language model, my knowledge cutoff is September 2021, and I don’t have access to current events or nominations beyond that date. Therefore, I cannot provide you with an overview of the current year’s Best Picture nominees. However, in general, the Best Picture nominees at the Academy Awards represent the most critically acclaimed and culturally significant films of the year. These films typically showcase exceptional writing, direction, cinematography, acting, and other aspects of filmmaking, and they often tackle complex themes and issues that resonate with audiences. Over the years, Best Picture nominees have represented a wide range of genres, from dramas and comedies to science fiction and animation, and they have been produced by both major studios and independent filmmakers. Winning the Best Picture award is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the film industry and can have a significant impact on a film’s box office performance and cultural legacy.”
Conclusion
I personally feel that AI writing tools can be very useful but I don’t think they are a replacement for a human when it comes to content creation. The creative opinions that humans add to their content cannot be replaced by AI writing platforms like ChatGPT. They can make the writing process easier by providing an option for an author when they are stuck with writer’s block but most AI writers end up generating content that is somewhat robotic in nature and just doesn’t feel like a human wrote it. ChatGPT is impressive and it is a lot of fun to work with, but it’s not perfect.
In fact, when I asked, “Can ChatGPT replace a human writer?”, this is the response I got.
“As an AI language model, I can produce written content based on patterns and information from the vast amount of data I have been trained on. While I can generate text that may be grammatically correct and even informative, I am not a substitute for a human writer.
Human writers bring a unique perspective, creativity, and tone to their work that an AI language model cannot replicate. Human writers are also better equipped to understand the nuances of language, culture, and audience, and can tailor their writing accordingly.
That being said, AI language models like ChatGPT can be used to assist human writers in their work, for example by generating ideas, summarizing information, or suggesting alternative wording. Ultimately, while AI language models have their strengths, human writers remain essential for producing high-quality written content.”
