Make any phone MagSafe mount-compatible.
If you are unfamiliar with the FOMO movement, let me explain a bit about the fear of missing out. As a Xennial, I was able to experience an analog childhood like my parents but grew into a tech-filled adolescent and adult life. Those born between 1978-1984 truly experienced the portmanteau that Sarah Stankorb coined in 2004 for someone who was not solely Generation X or Millennial, but something unique.
We grew up alongside the home/portable gaming consoles, home/laptop computers, witnessed the birth and expansion of smartphone technology, and enjoyed so much more. With the march of tech over time, it often can be challenging to keep up. Here is where the FOMO truly sets in.
Each year, Apple releases its newest lines of iPhone, Apple Watch, provides iOS updates, and other new or upgraded devices. Even though Apple moved to MagSafe charging for their iPhone 12 lines in 2020, many people still enjoy older generation iPhones, and some with MagSafe incompatible cases. When asked, my friends/family state that their iPhones still work well and they do not yet require an upgrade.
Even though wired charging is quicker and more efficient, I like to use wireless charging to keep my iPhone 13 Pro Max up and running. I thus have found MagSafe wireless charging to be quite convenient. For those who are on the fence about upgrading or may have a non-MagSafe-friendly case, consider picking up a MAGDOKA disc to enjoy the plethora of mounting options.
UNBOXING
The SwitchEasy MagDoka Disc arrived in a 3 5/8 inches wide by 4 3/4 inches tall by 1/2 inches thick hanging style retail package. The front panel listed the company name and product name along the top left, a yellow universal compatibility icon along the top right, and six MagSafe Accessory icons along the bottom of the panel (car mount, Wall Mount, Wallet, stand/charger, speaker, and more).
The main focal point of the cover panel was the image of the clear oblique case with an attached metallic ring. I liked the yellow top, side, and bottom panels, and felt that the mustard-yellow accents successfully highlighted the white front/back panels. The rear panel provided a helpful diagram of a device/case without MagSafe, the installed MagDoka Disc, and the resulting MagSafe Compatible upgrade.
The lower segment provided an SKU barcode, detailed the Classic Blue color, provided two QR codes (VIDEO GUIDE, US Website), and detailed four product features (1. Linen fabric with a comfortable feel. 2. Special rare earth magnets embedded. 3. Attaches to phone/case with reusable and reside free glue. 4. 2 mm thin does not interfere with performance or appearance). Lastly, you will find a diagram adjacent to the product features that detailed the product size: 58mm diameter by 2mm thick.
INSTALLATION
To access the MagDoka Disc, I cut the tape along the top panel, removed the top flap, and slid the large black envelope out of the shell. Within the envelope, you will find a helpful two-panel instruction manual and a folded black measurement card. I placed my son’s Otterbox-protected iPhone 7 facedown, unfolded the cardboard measurement card, and then centered the opening upon the case.
Even though the card and instruction manual recommended centering the ring in the vertical and horizontal position, the Otterbox case had an Apple cutout that had to be considered. I thus aligned and centered the card to rest just beneath the Apple cutout. I then removed the clear plastic backing from the 0.1-ounce, 1/16 inches thick, by 2 1/4 inches diameter by 3/8 inches wide disc, appeased my OCD by aligning/centering the mageasy logo, and pressed the blue tweed ring onto the surface of the case. The installation process could not have been any easier.
UTILITY
Once the mageasay MagDoka Disc was installed, I found that my son’s phone was able to pair with MagSafe mounts and hardware. This setup did not introduce or allow for wireless or MagSafe charging, but did allow for optimized handsfree opportunities. We installed a MagPoka ring (review coming soon) in his bathroom for bath/shower music, and also installed one onto his desk for handsfree streaming.
The MagDoka disc provided a secure connection to the rubberized Otterbox case and allowed for firm/reliable attachment to the MagPoka, and to the car-mount SwitchEasy Magmount (review coming soon). The swivel base of the car attachment provided a more customizable viewing angle than the simple MagPoka. However, both devices showcased the power of the add-on magnet. I was impressed with the strength of the attachment, the easy/convenient installation process, and with the expanded possibilities.
My son loved the ability to set his phone onto the MagMount to listen to his music on car rides and the ability to stream movies or music while sitting at his desk. Thanks to the MagDoka Disc enhancement, we will likely squeak out another cycle before he expresses an overwhelming need to upgrade. For those with iPhones 8-11, which support wireless but not MagSafe charging, you can utilize the ring to create a MagSafe experience.
For those interested in other colors besides Classic blue, you may enjoy black and stone grey options. Even if your phone allows for MagSafe mounting, some thicker cases decrease the magnetic strength. For those instances, use the MagDoka disc to regain the ability to utilize MagSafe mounting. Lastly, the MagDoka adhesive can be removed from a surface, re-attached to another, and will not mar/scuff the surface.
